Livingston Overall Advisory Leadership Council Meeting

-Welcome & called meeting to order at 6:52 p.m.

-Introductions were given by all attendees.

Programmatic Updates:

  • 4-H – Mikaela & Christy gave overview of 4-H Program
  • Nutrition & Community Health – Eva gave overview of Nutrition & Health Program.
  • Horticulture – Clark gave overview of horticulture program.
  • ANR – Bobby gave overview of the Agriculture & Natural Resources Program.

Advisory Council Responses

Lesson Focus suggestions:

  • kindness & empathy

  • intrapersonal skills

Project/Program suggestions:

  • gardening/horticulture
  • entrepreneurship, budgeting, saving money
  • legislative, government/civic duty

Project Training Day suggestions:

  • continue PTD focus with board members
  • crafts/sewing, wetlands, agriculture, food & fitness

Other suggestions from ALC:

  • add more parish scholarships-restaurant fundraisers
  • keep virtual contests-communication/advertising events
  • parish-wide service-learning topic focus
  • Flavors of Health
  • Council of Aging sites – Livingston & Maurepas – “Seniors on the Move” initiative – activity for 30 minutes every day.
  • CenterWell -3 one-time lessons with seniors.
  • Springfield Head Start – parent meeting – gives tools to help keep families healthy.
  • Youth – Pards Camp (300 youth) -encourage them to eat healthy and exercise.
  • Stenciling playgrounds to promote healthy living & exercise at Lewis Vincent Elementary, Springfield Elementary, and French Settlement Elementary.
  • One day cooking camp with 4-H youth.

Master Gardeners:

  • Community Outreach Projects – Plants sales – Spring & Fall, Seed Library at all libraries, free Library Talks, One paid course at Southeastern/Livingston Center.
  • Fundraisers – citrus tree sale, grants & scholarships for school gardens & 4-H members attending 4-H Camp & 4-H University.
  • Beautification project – Parish Office Building, Bloss Street & Council on Aging in Denham Springs.
  • Suggestions: Strawberry Sale in the Fall. Plan to have strawberry growing workshops.
  • Wildflower plantings on right of way – working on permit. Possible courtyard project during the Fall at Maurepas Council on Aging.

-Livestock & Forestry are the main areas covered.

-Meetings onsite with producers.

-Tours and Meetings with boards.

-Added youth field day to all Cattlemen’s field days.

-Beef & Forestry tours are coming up.

Ideas from Council:

Forestry – don’t cut so many trees down. Pollinators are dying.

Beef Field Day – have kids work the calves, low stress cow movement, branding activity, and AI.

David Hoover will work on getting containers for the garden project at the Council on Aging.

Possible space on Bloss Street for Council on Aging participants to walk and work the garden.

Final comments were made, and the meeting was adjourned at 7:37 p.m.
