The 2011 Lafourche 4-H Garden Contest was recently held and according to Donna Ayo, Lafourche Parish 4-H agent, "4-H'ers interested in participating needed to: select a site for their garden, make a plan on what crop they would grow, plant their garden, keep records and take pictures of their gardens' progress."
Ayo added, "Every garden was judged by a team of judges who traveled to each contestants' home to view and evaluate what the 4-H'er had grown. The participants were also interviewed by the judges to determine their understanding of how to garden."
Criteria used by the judges included:
1. Variety of vegetables (Example: tomatoes, beans, squash, and some type of root vegetables) .
2. State of cultivation.
3. Free from insects and diseases.
4. Quality of vegetables.
5. Interview with judge.
6. Garden record, pictures and 4-H garden story.
