Parish 4-H Members Enjoy Camp

Twenty-five Jefferson Parish 4-H members joined members from Orleans, St. Bernard, St. Mary, Plaquemines, Bossier and West Baton Rouge parishes for an exciting week of good times and good friends. The week-long camp was held at the Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center in Pollock, La. Campers enjoyed educational tracks which included: Outdoor Adventures; Victory Garden; Food & Fitness; Dramatic Arts; Exploring Louisiana: Wetlands, Wildlife & You!; Get Ready, Get SET … Science, Engineering & Technology!; Hunter Safety; and many recreational activities.

4-H Day at the Capitol

Six Jefferson Parish 4-H members and eight volunteer leaders visited the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge on June 1, 2011, for 4-H Day at the Capitol, joining hundreds of 4-H members, 4-H volunteers and parents from throughout the state. While at the State Capitol, members of the Jefferson delegation visited with Senator Danny Martiny, Representative Robert Billiot, and Representative Kirk Talbot. Members of the Jefferson group were also able to sit in on a committee hearing with Representatives Tony Ligi, Patrick Connick, and Girod Jackson. 4-H Day at the Capitol is an annual event held in early June each year. It is open to 4-H members and their families.

Teens Attend 4-H University

Nine Jefferson Parish teens participated in the annual State 4-H University held in late June 2011 on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge, La. More than 1300 4-H members from across Louisiana spent several days in Baton Rouge participating in state level competition or receiving intensive training in selected subject areas, such as Forensics, Robotics, and Citizenship. Jefferson Parish participants included: Brittany Landry, Salvador Caillouet, Tiffany Landry, Nicholas Victoriano, Matthew Victoriano from Fisher Middle/High School; Arrash Faili, Emzy Pomacino, and Cecilia Borne from Word of Life Academy; and Brooke Harper from East Jefferson High School. Brittany Landry was named Blue Ribbon Winner in the Ready to Wear Fashion Revue Contest. She also served on the State 4-H Fashion Board and was Co-Chairman of the Fashion Revue. Arrash Faili and Cecilia Borne served as voting delegates from Jefferson Parish.

Youth Wetlands Program

Youth Wetlands Program registration is now open! The YWP program develops and distributes wetland education curriculum and teaching materials FREE to any 4th - 12th grade teacher. The overall goal is to enhance students’ knowledge of the various types of wetlands found throughout the state and how they can get involved in wetlands conservation. Parish 4-H Members Reconized

Jefferson Parish LOST (Louisiana Outdoor Science and Technology) Camp participants included: Nerri Borne, Word of Life Academy; Arianna Gabbidon, Ruppel Academy; Ke’Vonn Faulkner , West Bank Teen Leader Club; Mary DeVillier and Noella Balint, East Bank Teen Leader Club; Collin Camardelle, Worley Middle School; and Kaori Keyser and Selena Rodriguez, Roosevlet Middle School. They were also accompanied by Counselor Laura Melancon, Fisher Middle School and Volunteer Leader Denise Balint.

Jefferson Parish 4-H Scholarship Recipients: Brittany Landry and Jeremy Balint received Scott Truck and Tractor Scholarships for Jefferson Parish. Brittany also received 4-H Foundation Award Scholarship.

4-H Camp Counselor Leadership Award Recipients: Laura Melancon, Fisher High School and Cecilia Borne, Ariel Maynard, and Arrash Faili from Word of Life Academy received Camp Counselor Leadership Awards.

Marsh Maneuvers participants included Laura Melancon from Fisher Middle/High School; Cody LeBoeuf, Mailbox Member; and Cecilia Borne, Word of Life Academy.

Laura Melancon from Fisher High School represented Louisiana at the 2011 4-H National Shooting Sports Competition this summer in San Antonio Texas. The team placed in Air Rifle 3 Position, 3rd place; Air Rifle Silhouette, 2nd place; and 3rd place overall Air Rifle in the nation.

Jefferson Parish Beef Poster Contest Winners were as follows: First Place Division 3, Arrash Faili, Word of Life Academy; First Place Division 2, Kenny Guinto, Word of Life Academy; First Place Division 1, Kaylee Mouser, Solis Elementary. Other parish ribbon recipients were Brian Herron, Mautassm Esmail, Shelby Brehm, Mhron Thabata from Solis Elementary and Katie Maise from Word of Life Academy.
