SNAP-Education Program

The SNAP-Ed program provides free educational programs and classes for anyone who receives or is eligible to receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The goal of SNAP-Ed is to increase, within a limited budget, the likelihood that persons eligible for SNAP will make healthy food and lifestyle choices that prevent obesity, consistent with the most recent dietary advise reflected in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and USDA MyPlate.

Program Objectives

  • Dietary Quality: Helping participants adopt healthful eating habits and active lifestyles based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and USDA MyPlate
  • Shopping Behavior/Food Resource Management: Teaching easy techniques for thrifty shopping and wholesome food preparation
  • Food Security: Ensuring that SNAP households have enough to eat
  • Food Safety: Improving safe handling, preparation and storage of food
  • Home Gardening: Explaining how to plant and grow fruits and vegetables

Family and consumer sciences agents and trained nutrition educators provide services in 64 parishes.
