Caldwell youth competed at the Northeast District Livestock Show in Delhi recently. Team members include Leslee Bennett, Lane Linton, Jake Rollins and Hadley Smith. All four members placed 1st in Showmanship in their classes. Team members also placed with their animals at the show and were eligible to compete with over 2,000 youth from across Louisiana at the 80th annual LSU AgCenter Livestock Show in Gonzales. At the state show, Lane Linton, OBCA 4-H member, won Reserve Champion Feather Leg in the Exhibition Poultry Division with his Black Cochin. Jake Rollins, OBCA 4-H, placed 8th in Poultry Showmanship with his Black Cochin in the Exhibition Poultry Division. Hadley Smith, OBCA 4-H, won 2nd place in her age group judging fryers. Leslee Bennett, Member At Large, won 3rd place in class for Full Blood Doe in the Breeding Goat Division with her Boer goat. These students receive tremendous benefits from their livestock projects, having learned responsibility and discipline through feeding and caring for animals and following accepted ethical and animal welfare standards. Congratulations to these members for their hard work with their livestock projects.
Caldwell Parish Junior Leaders are selling flats of Louisiana strawberries as a fundraiser for the Junior Leader Club and the Caldwell 4-H Foundation. Orders can be placed through a 4-H Junior Leader or at the Caldwell 4-H office. Flats are $20 each and must be paid for when ordered; make checks payable to Caldwell 4-H. The deadline to order is Monday, April 6. Strawberries will be delivered to the 4-H office on Monday, April 13 and must be picked up at the 4-H office on April 13 from 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. or on April 14 from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. For more information call (318) 649-2663.
4-H Camp registration begins on Monday, March 2. Caldwell 4-H'ers will camp this year from June 15-19. To be eligible to attend, a 4-H'er must be in 4th, 5th or 6th grade and be 12 years of age or younger on Jan. 1, 2015. Camp fee is $175 and includes meals, lodging, a t-shirt, picture and transportation. A non-refundable $50 deposit for summer camp must be paid by Friday, April 24 to reserve your spot for camp. Payment is by check or money order only, made payable to Caldwell 4-H. All remaining fees must be paid and camp forms completed and turned in to the Caldwell 4-H office by Monday, June 1. To register, come by the Caldwell Parish LSU AgCenter office located at 106 Jackson Street in Columbia. Do not send forms or money to school. There will be a $25 charge for returned checks. Camp Grant Walker is an 80-acre campsite located near Pollock, Louisiana about 15 miles northeast of Alexandria. While at Camp, 4-H'ers will have the opportunity to participate in activities in Science, Engineering and Technology, Outdoor Adventures, Hunter Safety, Louisiana Wetlands, Wilderness Survival or learn to Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP). 4-H Camp is a learning experience that helps boys and girls appreciate the outdoors, live together as a group, get along with others and appreciate people with different interests and backgrounds. If you are interested in going to Camp, please come by our office as soon as possible to sign-up. Our camp numbers are limited and registration is on a first-come, first-pay basis.
The 4-H Pet Show has been rescheduled for Monday, March 30 at the Caldwell Parish High School tennis court. Contest registration will be at 9:30 a.m. with the contest beginning at 10:00 a.m. and ending at noon. Categories are Dogs, Small Animals and Large Animals. Members can enter 1-3 categories but cannot enter 2 animals in the same category. Participants will give a short speech about themselves and their pet. All animals must be in cages or on a leash. For complete contest guidelines, contact the 4-H office or the 4-H leader at your school. As a community service activity, we will be collecting dog food, treats and supplies to donate to a local animal shelter. Supplies needed are canned dog food (not dry), bleach, blue Dawn dishwashing liquid, old blankets or towels, tarps, zip ties, Milk Bone dog treats, braided rope chew toys (no rawhide chews), tennis balls. If you would like to participate, please bring your donation to the Pet Show.
4-H portfolios, including completed project books for grades 4-6 and grades 7-12, Club Secretary's Book, Club Reporter's Book, 4-Star applications and Caldwell 4-H scholarship applications are due to the 4-H office in Columbia on Tuesday, April 14.
Mark the date: 4-H U and Clover College will be held from June 22-26 at LSU in Baton Rouge! 4-H University is the premier 4-H event of the year for 4-H members ages 13 and up. 4-H U offers both competitive and non-competitive activities along a range of interests from technology to theatre arts. There are 40 contests offered in the competitive track providing individual and team competitions. If you're simply not into competition or just want some advanced training in your project or special interest area then Clover College is for you! Nine program tracks covering a broad variety of interests have been developed offering hands-on workshops and group activities. The registration fee for 4-H U / Clover College is $40 and is due to the 4-H office by Monday, June 1.
