On April 16th Melody Coco EFNEP Nutrition Assistant for Southern university Ag Center went to

Mamou Elementary home of the Fighting Chiefs.

Ms. Coco spent the day talking to the students about the importance of Healthy Eating. She explained how many of serving you need in each of the food groups for each day. She explained how they are now using the Choosemyplate, a new version of the Food Guide Pyramid, that is very easy for the students to understand.

Ms. Coco is currently working with Mamou Elem. on a spring garden; she is also making plans to do a fall garden when school begins in Aug. 2013. The students will be planting the following vegetables, cabbage, lettuce, carrots, radishes, cauliflower and broccoli.

Ms. Coco stated that the students have a tendency to try a new vegetable or any vegetable if they actually plant it, take care of it and watch it grow. When the plants produce the vegetables, they are all excited and ready to try it. Ms. Coco explained the many ways you can make a garden and how simple it is to use an old container. The students interacted very well with the demonstration and really enjoyed the presentation.
