According to the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, diabetes is now the fifth leading cause of death in Louisiana. Eight percent of the population in Avoyelles parish has type 2 diabetes, and, most likely, there many more residents in the parish who have the disease, but don’t know it yet.

Each month, Quincy Cheek, LSU AgCenter Family & Consumer Sciences Nutrition Agent, gets call after call from Avoyelles Parish residents requesting information about diabetes and nutrition for diabetics.

Quincy decided to team up with a Certified Diabetes Educator and Registered Nurse, Shelly Barton of Christus Cabrini Health Care to offer a Lunch & Learn program called Diabetes 101 & MyPlate for diabetics. The program was a great success with 26 people attending.

If you need information about nutrition for diabetics, or any other nutrition topic please contact the Avoyelles Parish Extension Office of the LSU AgCenter at 318-964-2245.
