Demo Day- Public Speaking

Contest Description: 4-Hers prepare a short speech on any subject and deliver before the judges. Speeches should have an introduction, body, and conclusion. They should also contain facts to support the content that is properly cited. Open to all 4-Hers regardless of project enrolled in.  

Example Topics: Top 10 reasons to join 4-H, Facts about your project area, Wetlands/Coastal topics, Animals. Topics do not have to be 4-H or agriculture-related. Any age-appropriate topic.

Grade Divisions:

  • Clover bud – K-3rd
  • Junior – 4th - 5th
  • Intermediate – 6th - 8th
  • Senior – 9th - 12th (Senior level winner may be awarded a scholarship to attend 4-H University in Public Speaking. Must be used in the same calendar year.)

Contest Rules:

1. Speeches must be between 2-4 minutes. 

2. 4-Hers are judged on the choice of subject, organization, development of introduction, choice of supporting material, development of conclusion, body control, conveying message, language, voice and pronunciation, attitudes, and overall effectiveness. 

3. Please note that in the public speaking contest you are NOT allowed to use posters, pictures, things, props, or visuals of any kind.

Judges Look For:

  • Appearance: Neatly dressed, neat hair, nails, hands clean, etc.
  • Speech Content: Information accurate, complete, and practical. Main points summarized. Appropriate introduction and organization to subject matter. Contestant’s poise and ability to present information in an effective way. Used reliable sources and factual information to support topic.
  • Length: Time used well. Presentation within the allotted time.
  • Response to Judges Questions Answers clear and concise.
