Discovered around 2700BC, tea is one of the oldest and most popular beverages in the world.
The U.S. market demand for tea was met almost exclusively by importation and reached $13 billion in 2019.

Introduction

Over the past decade, there has been an increased interest in growing tea in the continental U.S. As trialed by researchers at the LSU AgCenter, the tea plant, Camellia sinensis can be grown successfully for commercial tea production in Louisiana.

Research Projects

Funded by the Louisiana Dept. of Ag. and Forestry, a tea research and extension project was initiated by the AgCenter in 2017, and has conducted research studies, training workshops, and tea education classes in the past three years.

Resources

Extensive knowledge has been developed for tea from traditional tea production countries as well as by tea growers and enthusiasts in the U.S. Links to resources relevant to US tea production can be found here.
