The LSAM encourages visitors! We serve both the research community and the general public. If you are looking for an identification of an insect that is of pest concern, we can help.
The Louisiana State Arthropod Museum (LSAM) is located in the Life Sciences Building on the Louisiana State University Campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Life Science Building is located on South Campus Drive across from the Student Union. The LSAM is accessible through Room 575. There is 4,125 square feet of floor space that are mostly covered with Cornell style cabinets.
We have a small vial collection of ethanol-preserved specimens in nine 12-drawer cabinets and large numbers of fluid preserved by-catch jars of specimens.
Before visitors are allowed to use the collection, they will be briefed on our rules and policies; therefore, arrangements have to be made either with the Curator or Director for this briefing before the collection can be used. Please contact the Curator, Victoria Bayless, vbayless@agcenter.lsu.edu to arrange a date and time. Additional arrangements can be made for extended access for out-of-state visiting researchers.
Visitor parking on campus is limited but during work hours there is bus transportation from parking lots to the Student Union, directly across the street from the Life Sciences Building. Schedules and other information can be found here: Tiger Trails Transit | Parking and Transportation (lsu.edu)
We have benchtop space and microscopes available as well as a taxonomic library.
