BATON ROUGE, La. – Nicholas Adams and Chelsea Sutherland, both seniors in the LSU College of Agriculture studying agricultural education, have been selected for the Upper Division Agricultural Education Scholarship from the National Association of Agricultural Educators.

Adams is from Gheens, Louisiana, and Sutherland is from Monroe, Michigan.

Each $750 scholarship is awarded to upper level agricultural education majors to help offset expenses during their student teaching experience. Fifteen students from across the United States were selected based on their academic performance as well as on leadership and service activities.

Kristin Stair, assistant professor in the LSU College of Agriculture and curriculum coordinator for the agricultural education program, said this is a very competitive scholarship.

“We are so proud of our students for receiving it. Chelsea and Nick are both passionate about education, and we know they will do an excellent job as they move into their student teaching experiences this spring,” Stair said.

Adams and Sutherland will student teach in the spring of 2016. Adams will teach at Lakeview High School in Campti and Sutherland will be at Opelousas High School in Opelousas.

“I will use the scholarship to help pay for housing as I will be moving to Opelousas in the spring,” Sutherland said.

“Because the student teaching is unpaid, this scholarship awarded by NAAE will help defer the costs of living expenses during the semester,” Adams said, adding, “I am blessed to have such supportive friends and advisors within the Department of Agricultural and Extension Education and Evaluation who motivate me to accomplish my goals.”

The funding for the NAAE Upper Division Scholarship program comes from National Geographic Learning, Cengage Learning and donations by NAAE members.

NAAE is the professional organization in the United States for agricultural educators.
