With the grip of winter temperatures beginning to moderate, this year’s Hammond Spring Garden Day event on March 13 will give gardeners a chance to get out and enjoy a day in the garden.
The Hammond Garden Day will be held on the LSU AgCenter Hammond Research Station grounds at 21549 Old Covington Hwy. (Hwy. 1067 just off Hwy. 190) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Beginning at 9:30 a.m., LSU AgCenter faculty members and Master Gardeners will present sessions on square-foot gardening, gardening for hummingbirds, sustainable landscape, azaleas for Louisiana and lawn care.
The program also will include LSU AgCenter recommendations on gardening and related topics and feature garden products and services available in the area.
A tour of the Hammond Research Station at 10 a.m. and at noon will showcase some of the research at the station.
People who attend also may bring soil samples for testing. The cost for each one-pint soil sample is $10, payable by check or money order.
Concessions will be available, and Kevin Patrick will provide musical entertainment from noon to 1 p.m.
Visitors are asked to bring nonperishable food items to donate to a food drive to benefit the Tangi Food Pantry.
Admission is $5 per vehicle. More information is available from Sandra Benjamin at 985-748-9381.
