- LSU AgCenter announces Calcasieu-Cameron parish Rebuilding, Flood Protection Expo

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The LSU AgCenter’s Disaster Recovery and Mitigation Unit, together with Calcasieu and Cameron parish officials, will present a free Community Rebuilding and Flood Protection Expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 16 at Grand Lake School.
This expo is designed to teach homeowners how to protect their homes from damages caused by hurricanes and other weather-related occurrences, according to Lucile Guidry, an LSU AgCenter extension associate.
She said the event will provide information regarding the many options available for hurricane protection including retrofitting current structures, as well as nonstructural flood protection methods.
“We will have several specialists and researchers on hand to talk with homeowners about what they can do to better protect their homes,” Guidry said. “We also will have information available that homeowners can take with them, and we will have models and other exhibits they can look at to see how retrofitting techniques, such as installing hurricane straps, are done.”
Topics and exhibits planned for the expo include:
-- Online Mapping – flood zones, wind speed and ground elevation.
-- Money to elevate.
-- The National Flood Insurance Program and Increased Cost of Compliance.
-- Soils and elevation certificates.
-- What’s happening with Road Home properties the state has bought?
-- The Next Storm, a surge modeling slide presentation.
A Permit Officials Panel will be set up by officials from Calcasieu and Cameron parishes.
Continuous demonstrations of correct installation techniques for doors, windows, siding and roofs will also be available. A representative from the local Home Builders Association will be available to discuss the importance of finding the right contractor.
Grand Lake School is located at, 1039 Highway 384, Lake Charles, La.
In addition to the expo, the weekend also will include a Cameron Parish Tour of Hurricane-Resistant Homes on Sunday, May 17. The home tour will consist of new built-to-code houses that have already survived one hurricane – Hurricane Ike in 2008.
