- Learn to predict storm surge from flood maps at Iberia Parish seminars

The LSU AgCenter has scheduled seminars at the Iberia Parish library branch locations help people predict storm surges from hurricanes using flood maps.
The seminar will be July 16 at the Eastside Branch in New Iberia at 1:30 p.m. and repeated July 21 at the St. Peter Street Branch in New Iberia at 1:30 p.m. and at 6 p.m.
Topics include:
–Where are you exactly on the map? Henry “Paco” Capello of the LSU AgCenter will help individuals find ground elevation and wind hazard level by address.
–The next storm surge computer storm modeling. Thomas Hymel and Maurice Wolcott with the LSU AgCenter will use 2008 data to demonstrate “what if” scenarios regarding landfall of storms of similar strength at different points of landing.
–What a flood map means and how to read the map. The LSU AgCenter disaster recovery and mitigation unit will answer the questions: What if I don’t want flood insurance? What are all those letters A, V, B, X zones about? What can I do as an individual?
–How to use a flood map when planning. The LSU AgCenter disaster recovery and mitigation unit will answer the questions: How can a flood map help me plan? Does it matter if I use a flood map? Is it illegal to ignore the flood map when making building plans?
The seminar will be presented in conjunction with Louisiana Sea Grant, the United Way of Iberia Parish and the Iberia Parish Chamber of Commerce.
