The Louisiana 4-H Educational Awards Trip is one that 4-H members across the state look forward to. In addition to receiving awards, winners are treated to meals and tours in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

“In years past, the three-day event was known as the New Orleans Good Provider Trip,” said Tanya Walker, instructor with the LSU AgCenter’s 4-H Youth Development program. “But since Katrina, we’ve added Baton Rouge attractions.”

This year’s trip began Nov. 23 with tours and culminated Nov. 25 with an awards luncheon.

The 2008 Good Provider winners were: Keaton Northington and Michele Bourgeois, St. Charles Parish; Makayla Labranche, Livingston Parish; Sarah Usé, Terrebonne Parish; Madalynn Barbay, Pointe Coupee Parish; Megan Simon, St. Martin Parish; Ashley Coco, Concordia Parish; Tiffany Barnhart, Rapides Parish; Dennis Boudreaux, Vermilion Parish; Alex Sauer, Bossier Parish; and Taylor Snell, Union Parish.

State Record Book contest winners were: Erika Anderson, animal science, Bossier Parish; Kelli Cantu, communications, St. Martin Parish; ReAzalia Allen, community study and service, Caddo Parish; and Linda Nguyen, family life, St. Martin Parish.

Belinda Krumtum, a 4-H adult volunteer winner from Bossier Parish, was recognized with the Good Provider Leader award.

In New Orleans, the winners had lunch at Café Reconcile, a restaurant that houses a program for at-risk youth. The 4-H’ers learned about the training that helps at-risk youth enter the hospitality and restaurant industries.

In Baton Rouge the 4-H’ers toured at the LSU AgCenter Burden Research Center and the LSU Rural Life Museum, had dinner at the Mall of Louisiana, attended the LSU Men’s Chorus concert, visited the LSU mascot Mike the Tiger and toured Tiger Stadium.

Trip sponsors included the LSU AgCenter, LSU Rural Life Museum, LSU AgCenter Burden Research Center, Dixie Electric Membership Corp., Entergy, New Orleans AgriBusiness Council, LSU School of Music, LSU Athletic Department, the Louisiana 4‑H Foundation and the 4‑H State Office.
