Lafourche 4-Hers Named National Champions At Poultry and Egg Conference

Youth who represented Louisiana at the 2006 National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference in Louisville, Ky., took a number of honors, including two national championships. Five Louisiana 4-H’ers were among those winning national championship honors this month at the National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference in Louisville, Ky.

In all, 10 Louisiana 4-H’ers represented the state at the Nov. 15-16 conference, which is held each year as part of the North American International Livestock Exposition.

The national championship honors for Louisiana went to a judging team and an individual, who all were from Lafourche Parish.

The 4-H Poultry Judging Team from Louisiana captured the 2006 national championship honors in the overall judging contest. The team – Meagan Hebert, Kristen Naquin, Kacey Rodrigue and Kourtney Rodrigue, all from Lafourche Parish – and its individual members also won a variety of other honors during the competition.

In addition to that championship, 4-H’er Samanatha Lirette of Lafourche Parish was named the national champion in the Chicken Barbecue Demonstration Contest. Lirette was judged on her illustrated presentation and barbecuing skills.

Other honors for the poultry judging team from Lafourche Parish included first place in the market egg judging, first in the market poultry judging and third in the egg production portions of the competition.

Individual members of the judging team were honored, as well.

–Kacey Rodrigue was the first-place individual finisher in the overall contest, the first-place individual in market poultry judging, the third-place individual in market egg judging and the ninth-place individual in egg production judging.

–Naquin was second-place individual finisher in the overall contest, fourth-place individual in market egg judging and eighth-place individual in market poultry judging.

–Kourtney Rodrigue was fourth highest-scoring individual in the overall contest, sixth-place individual in the market poultry judging and eighth-place individual in market egg judging.

Other Louisiana winners included William Dunkleman, a 4-H’er from Terrebonne Parish who placed fifth in the National Turkey Barbecue Contest, and Elisa Istre, a 4-H’er from Lafourche Parish who placed seventh in the egg preparation demonstration contest.

In addition, Katie Authement, Kyla Rodrigue and Brittany Williamson of Lafourche Parish represented Louisiana in the Avian Quiz Bowl competition at the conference.
