The LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana Mosquito Control Association are sponsoring a workshop for applicators interested in certification as pesticide applicators for mosquito control/public health.
The March 8-10 workshop in Baton Rouge is intended both for those interested in recertification or initial certification in categories 8a, 8b, 8c and 8d, according to LSU AgCenter pesticide safety specialist Dr. Mary Grodner.
The workshop will begin at 11 a.m. March 8 at the Holiday Inn South in Baton Rouge and will conclude at noon March 10.
"The first two days will be classroom style at the hotel," Grodner said. "The third day will be at the LSU AgCenter’s Livestock Barn on the LSU campus and will involve a hands-on session during the morning and certification examinations administrated by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry during the afternoon."
There also will be a session for advanced applicators who are already certified the afternoon of March 9, but in order to receive recertification, those applicators also must attend the hands-on session the morning of March 10, Grodner said.
Advance registration fees are set at $10 for members of the Louisiana Mosquito Control Association and $30 for others. On-site registration will involve an additional $5 fee for all. Lunch will be provided during the third day’s session.
Workshop registration information can be obtained by visiting www.lmca.us. Hotel reservations may be made by contacting the Holiday Inn South at 9940 Airline Highway in Baton Rouge at (225) 924-7021. Room rates are $70 per night.
Mosquito control training manuals also are available from the LMCA. Participants can pay for and reserve a copy for pickup at the workshop, or for those who wish to obtain one for advance study, they can be ordered by contacting St. Tammany Parish Mosquito Control, 2800A Terrace Ave., Slidell, LA 70458 or by phoning (985) 643-5050. The cost is $10 for the manual plus $5 for shipping and handling.
The general standards study guides for pesticide applicators are available from the LSU AgCenter. Contact Grodner at (225) 578-2180 or firstname.lastname@example.org, and they will be sent to you. There are two of those guides, and the charge is $5 plus tax per manual for a total of $10 plus tax.
