ALEXANDRIA – The fourth Louisiana Beef-Forage Short Course will be held May 27-28 at Alexandria.

"Managing and marketing beef cattle for optimum profits is the theme for the field day," said LSU AgCenter beef cattle specialist Dr. Bill Davis.

The short course will be held on the campus of LSU-Alexandria and at the nearby LSU AgCenter Dean Lee Research Station – 7 miles south of Alexandria on U.S. Highway 71.

"This short course is planned to provide farmers an opportunity to learn about the latest developments in technology in the production and marketing of cattle and forage," said Davis. "Participants will be able to visit with and listen to some of the most knowledgeable professionals from industry, universities and the government."

Sessions will be held in the field and in a classroom the afternoon of May 27. They will cover such topics as tracing cattle through the marketing chain, matching beef and forage production, utilizing summer forages, improving the market for cull cows, using herbicides to control weeds in pastures and fence rows and using advanced technology to keep records on cattle in the marketplace.

Seminars will continue May 28 and will cover marketing beef cattle, producing cattle for specialty beef markets and feeding cattle in the southern states.

The Louisiana Cattlemen’s Association also will provide demonstrations on the importance of marketing a high-quality product by following the Beef Quality Assurance Program guidelines.

Participants will have an opportunity to learn about new products and technologies during the breaks in the conference by visiting with trade representatives who will have industry booths set up. The trade show will be sponsored by the Louisiana Beef Industry Council.
