Michael Salassi is the interim vice president for agriculture and dean of the LSU College of Agriculture. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Business and a master’s degree in Agricultural Economics from LSU. He received his Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Mississippi State University. His area of research and extension expertise is in crop production economics and commodity farm policy.
Salassi began his professional career in 1985 as an agricultural economist with the USDA Economic Research Service in Washington DC. In 1994, he came to LSU as a faculty member in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness and then in 2015 moved into the role as Department Head.
Over the course of his career as an LSU AgCenter faculty member, Salassi maintained a teaching, research and extension appointment in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness, he taught courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level in the areas of agribusiness management science and operations research and served as major professor for 3 Ph.D. students and 16 M.S. students. As a faculty member, Salassi brought in $2.9 million in external grant funds, authored 55 articles in referred journals as well as 584 other publications and reports. He made 206 research presentations at professional meetings and 382 extension presentations to state clientele groups. Salassi has conducted economic research studies in the areas of biofuels, impact of feral swine, agronomic crop production and federal farm commodity policy.
Salassi moved into LSU AgCenter administration in 2019 as the Associate Vice President and Program Leader for plant and animal sciences. In 2022, he became the Executive Associate Vice President and Director of the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station.
Salassi was born and raised in Zachary, Louisiana and is married to Brenda Sylvest Salassi. They have two children and three grandchildren.
