After months of hands-on classes focused on learning new skills, mastering sewing techniques and having fun, members of the West Feliciana 4-H Sewing Project Club took the spotlight at their annual Fashion Show on May 14. The event, held in partnership with West Feliciana Middle School, transformed the school gym into a runway where youth proudly modeled garments they created throughout the year.

Under the guidance of Mrs. Martha Robertson and her team of dedicated volunteers. Participants met weekly for workshops to develop their sewing abilities. This year, the program implemented a new structure by grouping youth based on experience level rather than age, allowing for more targeted skill-building. The club included one beginner group, two intermediate groups, and one advanced group.

Youth participants completed a variety of garments based on their skill level. Beginners crafted pajama pants, early intermediate members designed skorts, late intermediate youth constructed dresses, and advanced participants created original outfits of their choice which will be showcased at 4-H University in June.

Prior to the runway show, all garments were prejudged by a panel evaluating quality and craftsmanship. Following the show, winners were announced, and all participants received certificates and prizes recognizing their hard work and achievements.

The sewing project reflects the broader mission of the 4-H Youth Development Program, which focuses on building life skills in belonging, independence, generosity, and mastery. Through sewing, youth engage in key program areas including healthy living, science and technology.

The annual event not only celebrated creativity and craftsmanship but also highlighted the lasting impact of hands-on learning and mentorship within the 4-H program.
