2026 Insect Pest Survey Notes Early Redbanded Stink Bug Activity

James Villegas, Edward, O'Neal, Barbosa, Daniel

As spring conditions continue to favor insect activity, the LSU AgCenter Field Crop IPM Team conducted an insect pest survey in 15 parishes to document insect pests present in vegetation adjacent to row crop fields. Using sweepnet, we sampled multiple vegetation types (including rye, oats, clovers, hairy vetch, and mixed grasses) at 39 sites.

Key observations from the 2026 survey

  • Redbanded stink bug (and other stink bug species) was detected in most of the sites particularly on crimson clover. Hank Jones (Ag Consultant) also reported early activity and relatively higher redbanded stink bug numbers from fields he monitors in Franklin and West Carroll.
  • Tarnished plant bugs were among the most common insects collected across many sites and parishes.
  • Threecornered alfalfa hopper, banded cucumber and bean leaf beetles were also frequently encountered in sweep samples.
  • Corn earworm and looper larvae were also observed on several sites.

These observations are an early-season snapshot and do not necessarily predict insect pressure later in the growing season. However, they emphasize the importance of early and regular scouting as planting progresses across the state.

Also, in the video "Cover crops provide many benefits, but they also serve as a host for pests", Dr. Jeff Davis (LSU AgCenter Field Crop Entomologist) shares information on cover crops and insect pests including redbanded stinkbug.
