(03/10/26) BATON ROUGE, La. — The LSU AgCenter is proud to announce that Carol Friedland, professor and director of the LaHouse Research and Education Center, has been named a Fellow of the Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers. This honor recognizes her leadership and sustained contributions to the structural engineering profession.
“Dr. Carol Friedland’s selection as a Structural Engineering Institute Fellow is a well-deserved national recognition of her sustained contributions to hazard-resistant design,” said Matt Lee, senior vice chancellor and dean of the LSU College of Agriculture. “Her work through LaHouse exemplifies the kind of research-to-impact scholarship that strengthens communities and saves lives.”
SEI Fellows are selected for their professional distinction and significant impact in the field of structural engineering. Friedland’s work in the field of hazard-resistant design has informed policies, building codes and community preparedness strategies. Her leadership at LaHouse has strengthened statewide efforts to promote research-based construction guidance that protects lives, reduces disaster losses and supports resilient communities.
Friedland served on the ASCE/SEI 24 Flood Resistant Design and Construction Committee and research led by her team at LaHouse directly supported the new 2025 national technical standard, helping shape the updated flood-resistant design and construction requirements in ASCE/SEI 24‑24.
Under Friedland’s direction, LaHouse has expanded its role as a national model for applied building science education, offering resources, training and hands-on demonstrations that help homeowners, builders and policymakers make informed decisions about resilient construction.
