In the heart of Bienville Parish, where community and tradition run deep, Makenzie Waggoner discovered her passion for cooking through the local 4-H program. What began as a simple interest in cooking evolved into a culinary career — one that would take her to one of America’s most prestigious resorts.
Waggoner’s journey began with Bienville Parish 4-H, where she eagerly signed up for food and nutrition projects. Her 4-H Agent, Megan Martin, saw a spark in her and knew that with a little love and encouragement she could live out her dreams.
“Ms. Megan and 4-H taught me that I do have the confidence to pursue a career in pastry. She wants all 4-Her’s — not just her kids — to strive for excellence,” Waggoner said.
Martin believed in her so much that she encouraged Waggoner and two of her friends to compete in the Next Healthy Food Star contest at 4-H University. Not only did this competition allow Waggoner to compete at a state level, but her team also won first place. From that placement, she earned the opportunity to compete at the Great American Seafood Cook-Off in New Orleans at the Louisiana Foodservice and Hospitality Expo. The experience opened her world completely, and Waggoner began to believe that she could pursue her dreams of becoming a professional chef. For a girl from Bienville Parish, it was a moment of pride and proof that her passion had real potential.
Seeing this dream unfold, Martin continued to encourage Waggoner to pursue her goals, giving her opportunities to cook on parish, regional, state and even national levels. That support carried Waggoner through her high school years and into culinary school.
Today, Waggoner works as a pastry chef at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, a luxury resort known for its world-class cuisine and historic charm. In the resort’s elegant kitchens, she crafts desserts that delight guests from around the globe — each one a reflection of the journey that began as a Bienville parish 4-Her.
