Okra is a member of the Malvaceae family, also known as mallow or hibiscus family, which includes the tropical crops cotton and ornamental hibiscus (see Figure 1) as well as roselle (also called Jamaica sorrell, Hibiscus sabdariffa) that is used in teas and salads. In addition, tropical plants of economic importance in this family include cacao, durian, kapok, jute and cola nut.
