Leading with Purpose: From 4-Her to Founder

Article by Adrianna E. Meyer

From taking a 4-H project to becoming the founder of a youth mentorship program, Quinterya Jackson’s 4-H story is a testament to how 4-H shapes confident, service-minded leaders.

Her involvement in the youth organization gave her the chance grow, meet new people, and pushed beyond her comfort zone. A graduate of Southern University of Baton Rouge, Jackson is now the founder and CEO of the Rising Stars Mentorship Program.

4-H helped Jackson to see beyond the boundaries her hometown and realize there is a world of new opportunities. Through holding leadership roles and being involved in opportunities, she was able to see the bigger picture about her future, setting her apart from her peers.

Not only did it open her eyes to the countless opportunities for personal growth, but it taught her the importance of leadership. Even after aging out of the program, the value of leadership stuck. “It helped shape my mindset to always take initiative and try to be someone others can depend on,” Jackson reflected. Through her leadership experiences, she also learned to embrace discomfort as a path to growth.

4-H taught Jackson how to approach challenges with a problem-solving mindset— both in her personal and professional life. She learned how to break big issues into several small manageable parts, and how to remain optimistic in tough situations. “Those experiences gave me confidence in making decisions and handling tough situations, both in my personal life and career.” Being a 4-H member for Jackson helped her recognize an opportunity in everything and seize them, even if it seemed intimidating at first glance.

Today, those lessons that Jackson gained as a 4-H member continue to share her everyday life. “4-H taught me the importance of service and leadership, and I try to use those values with everything I do—whether that’s taking initiative at work, helping others when needed, or just being someone others can rely on.” Jackson strives to lead by example, regardless of the environment.

Jackson encourages current 4-H members to embrace every opportunity. “Get involved in as much as you can, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone,” she advised. “Even if it feels uncomfortable at first, that’s where the real growth happens.”
