(04/10/25) BATON ROUGE, La. — Farmers looking to improve their business in local markets will be given the opportunity to learn how at the Beginning Organic Farmer Workshop on April 26 at LSU.
The event will be led by Daniel Parson, of Oxford College Farm at Emory University, who will present on sustainable practices for small- to medium-scale horticulture producers.
The workshop, sponsored by the LSU AgCenter’s Grow Louisiana Beginning Farmer Training Program along with the Louisiana Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Professional Development Program, will cover a range of topics to improve the knowledge and skills of local farmers.
“This training provides information, resources and networking opportunities for both beginning and established farmers interested in learning the basics of organic farming and accessing local produce markets,” said Isabella Frank, program director.
Parson has more than 25 years of farming experience as well as extensive knowledge in teaching and mentoring younger farmers. Some of the topics that will be covered include getting started, record keeping, production needs, soil fertility, rotations, farm design and infrastructure development, labor, weed control, harvest and postharvest, and pest management.

The workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Room 132 in Julian C. Miller Hall on the main LSU campus. Check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided, but drinks will not, so bring your own water or other beverage. For more information contact Frank at ifrank@agcenter.lsu.edu.
