LSU AgCenter to host virtual workshop on genetic resources for aquatic species

(09/03/24) BATON ROUGE, La. — The LSU AgCenter Aquatic Germplasm and Genetic Resources Center is co-organizing the second session of a virtual workshop with the National Institutes of Health Office of Research Infrastructure Program titled, “Development of Sustainable Germplasm Repositories for Aquatic Biomedical Models.”

The workshop will be held Sept. 9 and 10 from noon to 3 p.m. both days. It will offer a forum to address topics related to the development of cryopreservation technologies and germplasm repositories for aquatic species.

Topics will include:

—Needs and scientific status of cryopreservation and other preservation of gametes (sperm, oocytes and embryos), reproductive tissues, larvae and whole animals and their production of live offspring after revival.

—Emerging cryopreservation and other preservation methods and technologies as well as how to optimize and implement them.

—Methods, technologies and infrastructure to assess the impact of intrinsic and extrinsic factors on the quality, efficiency and success of cryopreservation and other preservation protocols and revival, including scalability and reproducibility.

—Sharing of technologies, including hands-on training for cryopreservation best practices and training of next-generation scientists.

—Preservation and management of samples from collection to utilization.

“Being chosen to organize this workshop by NIH is an indication of the national leadership roles of AgCenter researchers,” said Yue Liu, associate director of AGGRC.
