(08/09/24) BATON ROUGE, La. — Join Seeds to Success: The Louisiana Farm to School Program and the LSU AgCenter for the eighth annual Louisiana Farm to School Conference at Pennington Biomedical Convention Center on Oct. 2, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will emphasize three main components of farm to school: education, school gardens and local food purchasing.
The conference will gather participants from across the state for an opportunity to share, learn, celebrate and inspire the movement of bringing healthy, local, sustainably grown foods to the minds and plates of students in Louisiana and beyond.
The event is for all people who desire to increase access to local food and food education in their school communities. Whether it’s someone who wants to start a school garden and does not know where to begin, or seasoned advocates of local food procurement, this event is for everyone. Attendees will experience in-person sessions guided by farm to school champions from across the state. In addition, the gathering will feature a venue for networking in a relaxed, face-to-face environment, allowing participants to grow lasting connections.
The conference will feature success stories from farm to school advocates from around Louisiana. In addition, this year’s breakout session topics will include hydroponics, working with children in the garden, connecting with local producers, serving local products throughout the year, farm to school beyond the classroom and early integration of farm to school programming.
“Our team is excited to offer the eighth statewide Farm to School Conference,” said Crystal Besse, Louisiana Farm to School Program director. “The conference provides a venue for those participating in farm to school activities to connect, share and cultivate their efforts with other supporters of the local food systems sustainable agriculture movement.”
Jenna Mobley, teacher trainer with Life Lab, will give this year’s keynote address. Jenna began her career in education as a second-grade teacher in Atlanta Public Schools. At present, she continues to work at the intersection of the education system and local food systems, primarily developing curriculum and training teachers around the world with partner organizations including FoodCorps, Georgia Organics, Life Lab and Small Bites Adventure Club.
Online registration for the conference can be found at https://bit.ly/FarmtoSchoolConference. The cost of $35 per person includes breakfast, lunch, refreshments and sessions throughout the day.
