Record-keeping is an important part of every 4-H educational project on all levels. Many awards, educational trips and college scholarships are given to club members on the basis of their records and project work. Records show your progress toward your goals. Records are kept from year to year. Each year, add to it to include 3 years of work. Need help making it a “Record Year?” Join us for a workshop to get help putting together your record book, learn tips, tricks, and get ideas! Bring your current portfolio, project books, activity guides, and any other resources you feel may be helpful to your record book. The Workshop will take place Thursday, March 21, 6pm at our office! 4-H BINGO Contest!
Enrolled Ascension 4-H members are eligible to participate in the 4-H BINGO contest! The first 10 students to receive BLACKOUT by APRIL 15th will receive a prize. 4-H Summer Horse Shows
If you may be interested in participating in the Summer 4-H Horse Shows, please contact the office ASAP! Events such as roping, barrel racing, pole bending, ranch riding, western pleasure, hunter under saddle, and much more are offered at the summer shows. April 1st is the possession deadline. A copy of the horse’s registration papers, or a grade horse certificate must be uploaded in 4-H Online by April 1st.
State Leadership Boards!
Ready to take your leadership and 4-H experience to the next level? You may want to consider applying for a LA State 4-H Leadership Board! Members currently in 8th-11th grades may be eligible to apply. Leadership Boards are offered in the areas of Science, Engineering, & Technology (SET), Food & Fitness, Fashion, Wetlands Ambassador Team (WAT), Shooting Sports Ambassadors, Livestock Ambassadors, Equine Ambassadors, and Executive Board. If interested, contact the 4-H Office. More information will be given at the 4-H University info meeting discussed in this newsletter. Deadline to apply is April 26.
Come “Channel Your Leadership” at 4-H University!4-Her’s choose from over 30 competitive events ranging from Agricultural Use Demonstrations, Fishing Sports, Esports, Fashion Revue, Graphic Design, robotics, and more! Through competing, youth excel in life skills such as personal growth, teamwork, decision-making, problem-solving, resiliency, and many more. This year’s 4-H University event will take place on the LSU Campus June 18-21. Registration Deadline: May 22- all paperwork and money are due. There will be a MANDATORY INFORMATIONAL MEETING on March 25th for participants and parents. Junior leader meeting will follow!

“Packed Full of Fun, Friends, and Memories on 4-H Camp” at Camp Grant Walker July 15th-18th! Ascension 4-H will hold a MANDATORY INFORMATIONAL MEETING March 20, 6pm in the Lamar Dixon Banquet Rooms (**LOCATION CHANGE**) Please be sure to attend if you would like your child's name on the list to attend summer camp and if you would like information on this grand adventure! Summer Camp is open to youth in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. A $50.00 deposit will be collected at this meeting to hold your child’s summer camp spot. Depending on the number of students interested, a lottery may be used to select attendees. We are also in need of adult volunteers to chaperone camp. If interested, please contact our office for more information!

LOST Camp- 7th & 8th Graders
LOST (Louisiana Outdoor Science and Technology) Camp will be back at Camp Grant Walker this summer July 29- August 1. All 7th and 8th grade 4-H members interested, please mark your calendars. This camp is similar to summer camp but targets a slightly older age group. If you are interested, please contact our office to get on the list to be the first to receive information. More information on this will be forthcoming as we receive it.
Cookery Contest- March- Seafood
The Seafood cookery contest is a crowd favorite and we are blessed to have a readily available supply of fresh seafood here in south Louisiana! For each of our monthly contest entries, you will need to submit 2 copies of your recipe and 1-2 servings of your dish in a disposable container. You can earn extra points by submitting pictures of the before (ingredients), during preparation (action shots), and after (finished product) you have completed your dish and a short summary about your experience of cooking the dish. All of these extra components can be emailed to Mrs. Stephanie. The drop off day for your completed dish is on March 25th from 8 am to 5:30pm at the 4-H Office. From there, your entries will be judged by our volunteers. More detailed guidelines and explanations will be available soon on our website at https://lsuagcenter.com/ascension4h!! So please read over them carefully when they are posted.
Youth and School Vegetable Garden Contest
Gardens entered into the contest must contain at least 4 types of vegetables. Judges will look for plant health, weeds, records, and more! The garden contest judging will take place in early May. All participants will be notified of the exact time and date. More info can be found on our website. To register for the contest, please call the office or email mjsimoneaux@agcenter.lsu.edu by April 26.

The Parish, District, and State Livestock Shows are now completed. The Ascension Parish Livestock Show team did an amazing job in representing Ascension during each of these events! Shooting Sports Update
The completion of livestock shows marks the beginning of our local shooting sports competitions. These include our co-hosted East Baton Rouge match, the Ascension Invitational, and our state qualifying Southern Regional. Our members will get to experience their hard work, dedication, and training come to fruition. They will find the areas that need additional work and gain confidence to continue competing. Please join us in sending well wishes to our Ascension competitors and all shooting sport members!
Achievement Day Information

Achievement Day at the Dutchtown High School Gym on April 30, 2024!
Last year was the first year of changes to the State record book competition, so our Ascension Parish records competition has been update to reflect the changes. As you continue through the year, it’s important to keep track of all your activities and accomplishments to make submitting your record book easier in the spring. The Record Book Documents can be found at https://tinyurl.com/4hRBook .This new document must be used for the parish and state record book competitions!
** 4th and 5th graders can submit their 4th and 5th-grade PROJECT BOOKS for parish project work awards. We will judge the content and effort in the Discovering, Exploring 4-H, or other project books to recognize those who have completed them for Achievement Day. Books in this competition that do not submit the additional portfolio portion are eligible for PARISH competition ONLY, not state competition**
6th—12th and those 4th-5th graders wanting the opportunity to compete at state have one more step—the 4-H Portfolio. The Portfolio Document can be found at https://tinyurl.com/4hRBook . This new document must be used for the parish and state record book competitions, so please start transitioning your info! A helpful resource document has been uploaded to our website under “Contests< Record Book Competition” Project and Record Books will be due to the Ascension Office April 9th, so please start working! Learning how to complete and submit good project records is an excellent “life skill” which will help in many aspects of a member’s future.
Outstanding 4-H’er Nominations
As spring draws closers, we become busier, but be sure to remain active in your school club and parish 4-H activities! Each club leader will be eligible to nominate two members for the club and parish Outstanding 4-Her Award to be recognized at Achievement Day. Applications can be obtained from your club leader. Members at large can get an application from our office. All club leaders and members at large must turn in applications to us by April 9th.
Achievement Day Talent Show
4-Hers who have a special talent, whether singing, dancing, playing an instrument, etc. can sign up to be considered to be showcased in the LIVE 4-H Achievement Day Talent Showcase! To be considered, 4-Hers should complete the talent show entry form and submit a clear, quality video of their talent. More details and entry forms can be found on our website, www.lsuagcenter.com/ascension4h, under contests. Entry forms and talent videos are due to the office by April 9th! The agents will review the forms and videos to select the acts to be showcased LIVE at Achievement Day! Due to time limits, only a couple acts will be selected in each age division to perform live.
Achievement Day Service
Drum roll please….This year’s end of the year service project will be collecting Pop Tabs! Get your club and school on board to begin bringing in the tabs of any type of can… soup, soft drinks, energy drinks, etc. Pop tabs will be sold and the money will be used to benefit another charitable organization. There will be a friendly competition to see which club can collect the most pounds of pop tabs for Achievement Day! Good luck!
4-H Golden Clover Award & Emerald Achievement Awards
The 4-H Golden Clover Award and Emerald Achievement Award in Louisiana gives recognition and a $50.00 award to 4-H Club members who have shown outstanding leadership ability in their club and their parish. The object of the program is to encourage project growth and a broad program of 4-H club members who have shown outstanding leadership ability in their club and their parish. If you are active in your club or on a parish level, please consider applying.
Applications for these awards are due to the 4-H office on April 9, 2024. A club member may win the award only one time. Members in 6th-12th grades may be eligible to apply. Visit the applications/awards section of our website to download an application!
