4-H to host SeaPerch competition Saturday, March 2

(02/27/24) BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana 4-H will host a SeaPerch Regional Competition this Saturday, March 2, at the LSU Natatorium.

The SeaPerch program challenges youth to build and engineer a submersible remotely operated vehicle that can complete a series of underwater challenges during the competition. More than 100 youth from 27 teams across 10 parishes will compete during the day. Three winners will receive an invitation to attend the international competition in Maryland on May 31 and June 1.

“We’re looking forward to seeing all the teams at the competition,” said Brian Gautreau, Louisiana 4-H STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) coordinator. “The excitement from youth wanting to be involved in STEM programming has been overwhelming. We have over triple the participation that we saw last year.”

The competition also helps youth to develop communication skills, an often unrecognized STEM practice, as teams also must participate in an interview with a panel of judges and submit a technical design report on their remotely operated vehicle.

The event is put on through partnerships and generous support from the Louisiana 4-H Foundation, LSU Athletics, Louisiana STEM Region 2 and the LSU College of Engineering.

Teams will begin competing at 10:30 a.m., and awards are expected to be announced at 3:30 p.m.
