(12/13/23) BATON ROUGE, La. — For a second year, K through 12 students across the state were invited to participate in the Louisiana Farm to School Art Contest by submitting unique pieces of artwork that captured the theme of “What Farm to School Means to Me.”
This year, over 200 students answered the call and submitted entries. After much deliberation by guest judges from the local art community, 13 budding artists were declared winners. Each winner’s artwork will be featured in the 2024 Seeds to Success calendar.
The annual Seeds to Success calendar is designed to highlight the Louisiana Farm to School Program and the diverse agricultural landscape of the state. Every month of the calendar features one winning student’s artwork alongside helpful, seasonal information for anyone who wants to deepen their connection between the food they eat and the farmers that produce it.
The calendar includes monthly information on which Louisiana Harvest of the Month products are in season, a local producer spotlight and a helpful kitchen tip to enjoy fresh produce year-round. Looking outside of the kitchen and into the garden, the calendar also features helpful planting and harvesting suggestions for gardeners, young and old.
“We’re really excited for the chance to collaborate with students, producers and LSU AgCenter extension agents from all corners of Louisiana to bring this calendar to life” said Crystal Besse of the Seeds to Success team. “This really is a celebration of students learning where their food comes from and highlighting those that put in the hard work year-round to make those meals possible.”
Seeds to Success: The Louisiana Farm to School Program is made possible through an inter-agency agreement between the LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana Department of Education Division of Nutrition Support and funded through the United States Department of Agriculture. This partnership focuses on providing technical assistance to improve access to local foods in schools, coordinating training and networking for farm to school stakeholders statewide through state or regional conferences, workshops, online forums and other events, disseminating resources, promotion and guidance materials to improve access to local foods in schools, and connecting producers and farmers with school food service and distributors.
