Demo Day

The Ascension 4-H Demo Day is coming up on Friday, January 12th, and it’s never too early to begin planning! The holidays make a great time to work on your Demo Day submissions! There will also be activity stations for our 4-H members to participate in while the judging and contests take place. The Demo Day event details, registration link, and rules for each contest are posted in the Demo Day Contest tab at www.lsuagcenter.com/ascension4h Here are the lists of contests offered:

  • Public Speaking (Senior level winners may be eligible for a 4-H University Scholarship)
  • Interview Preparation (Senior level winners may be eligible for a 4-H University Scholarship)
  • Dress Review Garment Judging
  • Ready to Wear Garment Judging and Contest
  • General & Food Demonstrations
  • LifeBook Cover Design Competition
  • Exhibits- No pre-registration required. (can be turned into the 4-H office prior to Demo Day) Exhibit Categories are as follows:
    • Sewing (Non-Wearable Only)
    • Project Exhibit– Educational display board about your 4-H project area.
    • Decorated Wreath

    Clothing Contests- Held @ Demo Day!

    Sew with Cotton, Dress Revue and Ready to Wear will be happening on Friday, January 12, 10:00am at Demo Day. Get those final stitches done on your apron, skirt, or jumper and be ready to show off your creation! Entry forms and rules are available to all 4-H members on the website.


    Sweet Potato & Pecan Fundraiser – Thank You!

    Thanks for your support of the 9th Annual Ascension 4-H Foundation Sweet Potato and Pecan Fundraiser!! It was a success! With your help, we have sold 30,300 lbs. of sweet potatoes and 3,564 lbs. of pecan halves!! Our program would not be able to operate without this support from our members and the public purchasing these quality Louisiana products year after year! The money raised will help to support 4-H programming, end-of-the-year awards, and scholarships for camps & graduating seniors. Congratulations to Briggs H. (St. Amant P) for being out top seller for this year! The Top Selling club this year is St. Amant Primary!! Thank You!


    4-H BINGO Contest!

    Enrolled Ascension 4-H members are eligible to participate in the 4-H BINGO contest! The first 10 students to receive BLACKOUT by APRIL 15th will receive a prize.     December Cookery Contest - Sugar

    We are super excited to get our third and final cookery contest for 2023 kicked off with the Sugar Cookery! Be mindful all contests have had adjustments made so read the guidelines carefully! For each of our monthly contest entries, you will need to submit 2 copies of your recipe and 1-2 servings of your dish in a disposable container. You can earn extra points by submitting pictures of the before (ingredients), during preparation (action shots), and after (finished product) you have completed your dish and a short summary about your experience of cooking the dish. All of these extra components can be emailed to Mrs. Stephanie. The drop off day for completed dishes is December 11th from 8 am to 5:30pm. From there, your entries will be judged by our volunteers. More detailed guidelines and explanations will be available soon on our website at lsuagcenter.com/ascension4-H and will be posted on Facebook!


    Livestock News

    The Ascension Parish Livestock Show will be held at Lamar Dixon on January 19-20th! All livestock animals will arrive by 5pm Friday night, and we will kick off the show with our Annual Stick Horse Rodeo! All youth 11 and younger are encouraged to participate in the stick horse rodeo events, ranging from bucking stick horses to barrel racing and more! At $5.00 per event, registration for the stick horse events will kick off at 6 pm in Barn 8 at Lamar Dixon. There is no charge to watch! The judging of the livestock show will begin at 8 am Saturday morning. Come and stop on by!


    NEW State Fashion DAY Camp- “Fashion & Beyond ON TOUR”

    All 5th-12th graders interested in fashion, may want to attend the LA State 4-H Fashion Day Camp Experience- “Fashion & Beyond on Tour” to be held January 9, 2024 at the LSU Mini Farm. We will bring Fashion to YOUR fingertips! This camp is put on by the Louisiana State Fashion Leadership Board members. The 4-H Fashion Board would like to invite you to come experience the "new" Fashion & Beyond On Tour. You will get a closer look at all aspects of the fashion world, from newspaper runways, color wheels, upcycling, fibers, to basic sewing fundamentals. You will engage in multiple sessions of activities planned by the fabulous fashion board. *Limit 50 per location on a first-come-first-served basis. Transportation is not provided. For more information, please contact the office. Registration will open in 4-H Online on December 1st.



    Graduating Seniors- Honor Cords

    Don’t forget to apply to get your Honor Cords to wear while walking at your high school graduation! You have worked hard during your 4-H career so wear your honor cord PROUDLY! Applications are available and must be submitted online at Senior Honor Cords (lsuagcenter.com). It takes less than 5 minutes to complete! Applications are due by February 9th! The cords will be sent to the Ascension Extension Office and given at Achievement Day (unless needed earlier).



    Become a 4-H Volunteer

    Looking for a way to make a difference? Become a 4-H Volunteer! Volunteers are the heart of the Ascension Parish 4-H program. There are many roles and positions that provide important functions to help make 4-H programming successful on the school and parish levels. Individuals can volunteer to serve project leaders, provide transportation to 4-H events, assist with the parish or school 4-H programs, help with event setup/take down, clerical work, contest judges, and more. If you are interested in volunteering with us, please call the 4-H office. As a volunteer, you are supported by the insurance carried by LSU AgCenter for AgCenter events. You can enroll as a volunteer through the 4-H Online system mentioned previously in the newsletter.


    Junior Leadership Conference- 14y & Older

    Come ride the waves of leadership development at this year’s “Leadership in Paradise” Junior Leader Conference. The Junior Leadership Conference (JLC) is a two-night camp at Camp Grant Walker designed specifically for high school students aged 14 and older, spanning grades 8th-12th. Executive Board members will lead sessions in four different subjects. JLC tracks are created to provide participants with activities they can apply within their high school communities. Camp will be held March 7-9, 2024. Registration opens January 29, 2024 and closes February 12, 2024. Ascension can send 6 members to the conference. The fee is $90.00 and transportation is not provided, but we are willing to help coordinate with the youth attending for carpooling and assistance, if needed.


    Record Book Document

    Last year was the first year of changes to the State record book competition, so our Ascension Parish records competition has been update to reflect the changes. As you continue through the year, it’s important to keep track of all your activities and accomplishments to make submitting your record book easier in the spring. The Record Book Document can be found at https://tinyurl.com/4hRBook . This new document must be used for the parish and state record book competitions!


    • Project Books- Project resources will not be selected through the 4-H Online Enrollment site.
      • All 4th and 5th Graders will receive the Discovering the World of 4-H or Exploring the World of 4-H Project Books. No Ordering is necessary. These will be delivered to club meetings around November.
      • 2nd year 5th grade members and 6th-12th graders should place an order for a project resource if they are interested. All orders must be received by November 16th in order to be delivered to December Club meetings. Members are eligible to receive 1 project resource at no charge

    4-H Night with the Pelicans

    Enjoy a fun filled night with the New Orleans Pelicans and 4-H on January 19th! The Pelicans will be playing the Suns and tip off will be at 7:00pm. All tickets for this 4-H game need to be purchased by December 9th. Tickets and parking passes can be purchased on an individual basis or as a group order.     What’s Included with each ticket purchase:

    • Pelican promotion item on the night of the game is a plush pelican hat. (The Famous Carnival Celebration Bird Hat 2.0) Based on availability.
    • Pelicans Hoodie – Given out at the Pregame Tailgate Party 4:00pm-5:15pm and at the Group Sales Center outside of section 114 6:00PM until half time. Sizes based on availability.
    • A portion of the ticket sale proceeds will benefit 4-H Foundation

    Parish that sells the most tickets each 4-H Member from that Parish will receive a New Orleans Pelicans Swag Item (given to parish Agent or designated adult at the game to give out to 4-H Members)
