Once again, the 2023-2024 Achievement Day Service Project will be can pop tops! Remember that you can start collecting can pop tops now! All clubs will turn in the pop top donations at Achievement Day. All proceeds will go to the Ronald McDonald House in Memphis, Tennessee. Many children and their families from St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital use this location. Please feel free to get the whole school involved and put out collection jars if you would like to make some.
The 2023-2024 Achievement Day Theme is “4-H is How We Roll.” The theme was created by Libby Fontenot from Lucky Clovers. Libby will receive a monetary award at Achievement Day. Congratulations!
Our second Commodity Cookery Contest will be held on December 11, 2023. This will include the Sugar Cookery and the Seafood Cookery Contests.
Commodity Cookery Rules & Regulations (All Grades): Doors will open at 7:30am. for those who have school that day. Others may bring their dish at 8:30am. Dishes may be dropped off by a parent, and you do not have to be present to receive an award. Judging will begin at 9:00 AM. Once judging begins, no late dishes will be accepted. ALL participants must submit their recipe at the time of entry with category, division, name, grade and school club on the back of the recipe. Only one copy of the recipe (neatly handwritten or typed) is required. Each participant may ONLY ENTER ONE DISH IN EACH COMMODITY SUBCATEGORY. For example, you may enter a dish in Sugar
Baked Items and one in Sugar Other Dessert, but NOT two in Sugar Other Dessert.
Remember, dishes must be prepared at home. Each dish must be chilled on ice to 40° or lower (even cakes and cookies), plated in a disposable container and brought to the contest in an ice chest accompanied with ICE, or they will be disqualified. No place mats, serving utensils or flower arrangements, etc. will be accepted. NOTE: only 3-4 servings of the dish must be plated at the contest. For example, if the recipe states that it serves six, only three servings should be displayed but your recipe must state the entire serving size.
Sugar Cookery: Recipe must include at least one cup of sugar which includes raw, brown, powdered & granulated sugars only. Divisions: Baked items (bread, cakes, pies, cookies, etc.) and Other Dessert (candies, icebox pies, ice cream, etc. Homemade jams, jellies and preserves or raw eggs are NOT accepted entries).
Seafood Cookery: The dish must use at least one (1) cup of seafood. The seafood must be fresh, frozen, pasteurized or dried. Canned seafood is not acceptable. Surimi, an artificial crab made from fish, cannot be used. There can be no raw seafood in the final dish .Entries in categories 1 -5 may contain a small amount of a second seafood but not more than ½ of the amount of the primary seafood. For example, a recipe could contain one cup of crab as the primary seafood and ½ cup of shrimp as the secondary seafood. The Seafood Cookery offers five divisions: Shrimp, Crawfish. Oyster, Fish/Non-Traditional, Crab.
This is a fun activity open to all 4-H members. It will be held at the Crowley Rice Arena located at 159 Cherokee Drive Crowley, LA on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. One dog per participant (may choose to take part in 2 categories). In the event you are not a dog owner, you are allowed to show a neighbor or close friend's dog! Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the show starts at 6:00 p.m. This is a dog ONLY contest. Do not bring dogs that are too big or too aggressive for the 4-H'ers to handle. All animals MUST be vaccinated and restrained on a leash. Only dog 4-H exhibitors will be allowed in the arena. This year's categories are Best Dressed, Owner Pet Look Alike, Waggiest Tail, Highest Jumper, Most Obedient, and Best Bark. We will also have the Vet Set Geaux contest (formerly the Pet ID Contest) happening at the same time. This contest includes identifying breeds of dogs, cats, birds, etc. It also requires knowledge of pet care.

Come join the horse clinics this year for FREE! This year Acadia parish will be offering horse clinics. We will again team up with master horsemen throughout the region. The date is December 18th held at the Acadia Parish Rice Arena from 6 -8 p.m. In order to attend, youth must be a registered 4-H member AND bring your own horse.
Calling all 4-H Members to lend their hands to larger service. We are collecting hygiene products for children in foster care. These products will be gathered and donated to kids in foster care in Acadia Parish. Items we are collecting include travel shampoo and conditioner, body wash, deodorant, lotion, toothbrush, toothpaste, toilet paper, body wipes, band aids, brushes and combs, lip balm, hand sanitizer, sunscreen. You can bring your donations to the 4-H Office from January 16-20th. This drive will be held in conjunction with the Acadia Parish Livestock Show. There will be a box labeled hygiene drive at the office and the Rice Arena for you to drop your donations off!
Just a reminder that all livestock entries for the parish and district shows are due by December 8th via the FairEntry site. All animals that you plan on showing have to be entered into the 4-H Online site by the possession/validation date to be eligible for entry in to the shows. Animals must be approved in 4-H Online before you can enter them into the FairEntry site! Don't forget to register for showmanship through FairEntry! If you are showing a registered animal and you submitted a pending paper form, just a reminder that the official registration paper is due to the 4-H office by December 6th for all animals with possession dates in November. Swine entries will have 30 days past their possession/validation date to turn in official registration papers. Please email a copy of your official registration papers or drop off a copy to the office. If you are showing livestock this year and have not entered any animals in 4-H online, and it is past the possession/validation date for that animal, please call the 4-H office ASAP!!!

Attending college can be expensive. There are many opportunities for you to start saving money to attend. One way is through scholarships. There are several scholarships for which you may apply that will be awarded this year. Scholarships available are: Scott Tractor, Parish Livestock Show, District Livestock Show and several through the State 4-H Foundation. An email will be sent to all eligible seniors about the scholarship opportunities. If you would prefer to be mailed a paper copy, please contact the 4-H Office at 337-788-8821.
This year in an effort to recognize 4-H members who are graduating, Louisiana 4-H will offer a "4-H Honor Cord." For 4-H members to receive the 4-H Honor Cord, they must meet the following requirements: 1) must be enrolled in 4-H; 2) must be a graduating senior; 3) have been enrolled in 4-H for 3 high school years; 4) have participated in one state sponsored 4-H program in the last 3 years or show exemplary parish involvement; 5) must fill out an application form and turn it in by parish deadline date of February 2, 2024. We would like to thank everyone who has signed up for this year’s Acadia 4-H Shooting Sports. Hunters Education certification by December 31, 2023 is mandatory for all participants! In order to continue practicing after December 31, 2023, proof of Hunter Safety Certification must be submitted. Those registered for the January course can return to practices after certification.4-H Southern Regional match will be March 1-10, 2024. In order to compete, youth must have eight hours of official practice time. Each participant is required to furnish their own ammunition. Parish equipment must be signed out from the office during business hours.
