01. Happy National 4-H Week

National 4-H Week, October 1 – 7, 2023, is a week where 4-H Clubs across the country can showcase the incredible experiences that 4-H offers young people and highlight the remarkable 4-H youth in our community who work each day to impact those around them positively. We all love 4-H for various reasons; during the week, let us know why we love 4-H.

Wear Green Day will be celebrated on Wednesday, Oct. 4. We encourage everyone to wear green to show their love and support for 4-H.

02. Fall Paper Clover Sale

Tractor Supply proudly began our partnership with 4-H in 2010, and we have since helped raise over $14 million through our Paper Clover fundraisers. The success of the campaigns have impacted over 69,000 students by providing them with hands-on learning experiences through STEM, agriculture, healthy living, and civic engagement projects.

100% of funds raised through our two Paper Clover fundraisers directly benefit 4-H and the kids and teens they work with - 90% of donations directly support 4-H youth in the state it was raised, and the remaining 10% support national 4-H programming.

The Fall 2022 Paper Clover fundraiser will take place from October 4, 2023 - October 15, 2023. To support the St. John Parish 4-H Program, visit Tractor Supply located in LaPlace at 2335 West Airline Hwy, LaPlace, LA 70068. At check out, ask to purchase a $1 Paper Clover.

03. Fall Commodity Sale

We are now accepting orders for our Fall Commodity Sale. All pecans and sweet potatoes sold are Louisiana-grown and can be great gifts during the holiday season or a great addition to your holiday meals. Your support during this fundraiser is much appreciated, as it provides support for the 4-H Jr. Leadership Club.

The deadline to place orders is November 14, 2023, with a pickup date of November 17, 2023

04. Southeast Region Challenge Camp

What can you do next after attending 4-H Summer Camp? Well, the answer is to attend the Southeast Region Challenge Camp! This overnight camping opportunity is open to 7th and 8th-grade 4-H members. Participants will complete various challenges during this camp, enhancing their critical thinking and communication skills.

The 2023 Southeast Region 4-H Challenge Camp will be held Wednesday, November 1 – Thursday, November 2, 2023, at the Lion King Retreat Center in Amite, LA. The participation cost is $30, which covers lodging, meals, shirts, and transportation. Space is limited; therefore, spots will be given on a first-come-first-serve basis. The deadline to register for this event is Wednesday, October 4, 2023.

05. Pumpkin Decorating Contest

4-H’ers gather your paintbrushes and participate in the St. John 4-H Pumpkin Decorating Contest. This contest is open to all registered 4-H and Cloverbud members. Members can only submit one (1) pumpkin. NO CARVED PUMPKINS ALLOWED!

All pumpkins will be judged during their October Club Meeting.

06. Bash on the Bayou

Bash on the Bayou, formally called 4-H Night with the Tigers, will be held Saturday, October 21, 2023. Join Louisiana 4‑H’ers, FFA members, and the LSU College of Agriculture as LSU takes on Army.

Tickets for the game are $38 and can be purchased at the https://fevo-enterprise.com/event/Louisiana4H.

The tailgate party is FREE and will take place at the 4-H Mini Farm on LSU Campus. The tailgate will open at 10 am and end one (1) hour before kick-off, with lunch being served at noon. 07. Seed to Success Calendar Art Contest

Help us celebrate Farm to School Month and Louisiana Agriculture! All artwork should feature Louisiana Agriculture for the 2024 Louisiana Farm to School Calendar, which features fun facts about agriculture in our state. Artwork entries MUST reflect the theme of “What Farm to School Means to Me.”

08. Veterans Cards

On November 11 of each year, the nation honors all living military veterans. Veterans are men and women who have served in any branch of the United States Military, such as the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, and Space Force.

To honor the brave men and women who have fought for this country, the St. John Parish 4-H Program will ask 4-H members to write thank you cards to be delivered to the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Home in Reserve. See below guidelines for cards:

  • Open to all 4-H members and Cloverbud members
  • No glitter can be used
  • Cannot use larger than an 8.5x11 in. sheet of paper

All cards will be picked up at each school on Tuesday, November 7

09. Shooting Sports Camp

4-H members ages 9 through 13 and interesting in Shooting Sports, consider attending the 4-H Shooting Sports Camp that will be held December 8-10, 2023, at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, LA.

Youth who attend the camp will choose from the following disciplines to participate in: Archery, Shotgun, .22 Rifle, or Air Pistol/Air Rifle/BB Gun (Combined).

Parents/Guardians are welcome to attend, but it is not mandatory. The cost will be $120 per youth/adult, which will cover registration, lodging, meals, and a T-shirt. All youth will be required to bring their own bow/firearm and arrows/ammo.

The deadline to register for the camp is November 20, 2023.

Note: If parents/guardians are also attending the camp, they must complete the overnight chaperone training and screening process.

10. Fashion & Beyond on Tour

The 4-H Fashion Board would like to invite 5th – 12th graders to come to experience the "new" Fashion & Beyond on Tour. You will get a closer look at all aspects of the fashion world, from newspaper runways, color wheels, upcycling, fibers, to basic sewing fundamentals.

You will engage in multiple sessions of activities planned by the fabulous fashion board.

Fashion & Beyond on Tour will take place on January 9, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the 4-H Mini Farm on LSU Campus. The cost to participate is $25/person. There is a limited number of spots available for this event, therefore, if you are interested in participating, contact the St. John 4-H Office by phone at 985-497-3261 or by email at Xbell@agcenter.lsu.edu.

11. November Club Challenge

Join us in collecting items that will be donated to the St. Joan Ministry of Care as part of their Thanksgiving Food Drive. They have asked for specific non-perishable items that you can find below. All items will be picked up on November 6.

Participation will count towards the Service Award presented during 4-H Achievement Day.

12. Broiler Chick Orders

Raising young meat-type chickens (broilers) is one of the most interesting and fun-filled activities a 4-H’er can experience. Youth receive the chicks at 1-2 days old and raise them for 42 days. This is a great project for families who live within city limits and subdivisions where space on the property may be limited.

If you are interested in participating in the Broiler Project, all orders must be received by November 17, 2023, at the St. John Parish 4-H Office. Chicks are 75¢ each.

13. Summer Camp Request

To better gauge and assist families within the parish attending 4-H Summer Camp, we ask you to complete the interest form. This form is for those who wish to attend camp as a camper (4th-6th graders), camp counselors (9th-12th graders), and adult chaperones (18 years old and older and cannot be enrolled in 4-H during the 2023-2024 program year).

This form is to assist the 4-H Agent in requesting and updating the parish's bed count and financial assistance. By completing this form, you are not obligated to attend camp, as we know things may change between now and summer.

14. Holiday Wreath Decorating Contest

Spread holiday cheer and participate in the St. John the Baptist 4-H Holiday Wreath Decorating Contest.

RULES:

  • Can be by an individual 4-H member or a group of 4-H members
  • Wreaths must be made by 4-H members. BE CREATIVE
  • Wreath size should be 12 to 20 inches
  • Foam, garland rings, or wire frames may be used as foundations for the wreath. All other decorations must be natural, reused, recycled, or homemade
  • NO pre-made wreaths are allowed. You may use pre-made base
  • Fresh flowers, real berries, food, candy, glass or dangerous decorations should not be used on the wreath. Wreaths with these types of decorations will not be judged and will not be donated.
  • Fresh green plant materials MAY be used. If these materials are not fresh and leaves are falling off stems, the wreath will not be judged.
  • “4-H” and the four-leaf clover should be located on the front of the wreath. Wreaths will be judged on creativity, neatness in construction, and above guidelines.
  • Include your name(s), school, & grade level on a card attached to the back of the wreath.

All wreaths will be donated to the following locations based on the theme of the wreath:

  • Patriotism - Veterans Home
  • All others - Local nursing homes

The deadline to submit your wreath is Friday, December 1, 2023

15. Louisiana 4-H Day of Service

“…I pledge my hands to larger service…” Dec. 2, 2023, is Louisiana 4-H Day of Service, and we are asking you to participate by conducting a service project that benefits your community. If you are not able to participate on Dec. 2, know any service project conducted during the month of December can count as part of Louisiana 4-H Day of Service. If your club will be conducting a project, be sure to let Mr. Xavier know.

16. Save the Dates

It’s never too early to save dates. See the dates for upcoming 4-H Events you may be interested in participating in.

  • 4-H Night with the Pelicans: January 19, 2024 – Pelicans vs. Suns
  • 4-H Summer Camp: June 3 – 6, 2024 – 4th-6th graders campers; 9th-12th graders counselors – Camp Grant Walker
  • 4-H University: June 18 – 21, 2024 – 8th – 12th graders – LSU Campus
  • True Leaders in Equity Institute: July 8 – 11, 2024 – 9th-11th graders, Washington D.C.

17. Livestock Information/Updates

The 2023-2024 show season is upon us! Are you interested in participating in the 2023-24 St. John 4-H and FFA Livestock Program? Check the important dates below, and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Mr. Xavier.

  • Nov. 6, 2023 – Validation for Commercial Beef, Dairy, Ewe & Doe, and Market Lamb & Goat due to 4-H Office
  • Nov. 6, 2023 – Possession date for Beef, Dairy, Goat, Sheep, & Exhibition Poultry
  • Nov. 13, 2023 – Possession date for Mini Cattle
  • Dec 4, 2023 – Validation for Commercial & Market Hogs due to 4-H Office
  • Dec 3, 2023 – Possession Dates for Breeding Swine
  • Jan 4, 2024 – Broiler Chick Pick Up
