4-H is getting kicked off this month! School club leaders are going to be disseminating 4-H information to interested members at school. We will continue to use the NEW 4-H Online Enrollment System, but new this year- State and Parish fees will be collected in the 4-H Online System! If your school has not already given out 4-H information, contact the 4-H office to find out who is the club leader at your school and if your school has a 4-H program! Enrolled Ascension 4-H members are eligible to participate in the 4-H BINGO contest! The first 10 students to receive BINGO by December 15 will receive a prize. Cards will be handed out at club meetings, can be picked up at our office, or will be available for download in the “contest” section of our website. Full rules can also be found on our website. Please don’t forget to donate at checkout! Money raised from paper clover sales goes directly to our program to assist with camp scholarships and programming.
National 4-H Week will take place October 1-7. Join in the fun by helping to spread 4-H awareness and encouraging your friends to join! The Theme for Louisiana 4-H is Opportunity 4 All. 4-H provides opportunities for community development, friendships, citizenship, and developing leaders! We challenge each 4-H member to take advantage of the opportunities in their community by participating in 1-2 hours of service during 4-H week. Please share service stories with us- email a brief description and pictures to cbrady@agcenter.lsu.edu. Check social media for daily trivia, videos, stories, and challenges throughout the week!
Clubs can participate in the 4-H Week Display Contest! Decorate a shadow box, hallway, bulletin board, school entrance, office, or whatever school administration will allow you to! Registration is open until September 29th. All displays will be judged toward the end of 4-H Week during October 1-7. Registered participants will receive communication from the 4-H office as to exactly when judging will take place!
Help your club to WIN by participating in different events! We will have two NEW AWARDS this year! These clubs will be recognized at Achievement Day and will receive a party at the end of this school year!

Our Ascension Shooting Sports program is excited to get kicked off for the upcoming 2023-2024 Season! Our New Member Informational meeting will be held at 6 pm on September 28 at the Lamar Dixon Vendor Rooms. This is a mandatory meeting to join this project club due to the club’s fast pace starting deadlines and scheduled trainings, if your family is interested, please make every effort to attend.
The Home & Style Club will include cooking and sewing this year! Each month a cooking project will be completed in coordination with the cookery contests. The club is open to all Ascension 4-H’ers, meets on the 3rd Thursday monthly and its membership fee is $10.00 to join. This helps to pay for supplies used for project materials. The first meeting will be held on Thursday, September 21, 6 pm at the 4-H Office.

Wiggles & Wags is a project club that focuses on everything DOG! It helps members learn more about caring for, training, and working with their beloved canines all while doing service and growing in leadership. The Wiggles & Wags project club is open to all Ascension 4-H members and meets on the 2nd Tuesday monthly. The membership fee is $10.00 to join for the year. The Ascension 4-H Jr. Leader Project Club is open to all 7th-12th grade Ascension 4-H members. Jr. Leaders focus on leadership, citizenship, and teamwork. The service-learning theme chosen by the members will be Healthy Living- Nutrition and Poverty. The cost to join the Jr. Leader Club is $10.00. If you are planning to participate in the LSU AgCenter Livestock Shows and have not contacted the Ascension Parish Office to let them know your intentions of showing, please do so ASAP as important forms and information will be sent out to livestock exhibitors very soon.

We are super excited to get our cookery contest kicked off again this year in October and we have some awesome new updates to these contests!! For each of your monthly contest entries, you will have the option of earning extra points for pictures submitted highlighting the before (ingredients), during (action shots), and after (finished product) you have completed your dish. You can also earn extra points for writing a short summary of your experience of cooking the dish. You will need to submit your recipe and 1-2 servings of your completed dish to the 4-H office on the contest date from 8 am to 5:30 pm. Pictures and summaries can be emailed to Mrs. Stephanie in the format described in the contest guidelines. From there, your entries will be judged by our volunteers. The first monthly contest will be the egg cookery. More detailed guidelines and explanations will be available soon on our website at lsuagcenter.com/ascension4-H in the contest section!
Come have a spookatacular time at the Ascension 4-H Pet Show & Pumpkin Contest on Tuesday, October 17, 6 pm, Lamar Dixon Trademart Building. To participate in the pet show, pets must be up to date on vaccinations, in a cage, or restrained! The cost is $2.00 to participate in the pet show. Only one pet per 4-Her. There will be a costume contest (for people and pets), tricks for treats, and many other categories for your pets to be judged! You can bring and enter your decorated pumpkins in the following categories for judging: Carved, 4- H Spirit, Character, Prettiest, or Any Other! Concessions will be sold. Bring a (new/sealed) personal care item to donate to those in need!

Are you up for the Challenge of making new friends, working as a team, growing as a leader, and accomplishing a goal? If so, you may enjoy the Southeast Regional Challenge Camp for 7th & 8th Grade members. Challenge Camp will take place at Lion King Retreat Center from November 1-2.Registration is through 4-H Online and the deadline is October 20th.There is a $25 fee that includes a shirt, transportation, meals, and all activities.
Limited spots are available on a first-some-first-serve basis. Priority is given to 7th graders.
Looking for a way to make a difference? Become a 4-H Volunteer! Volunteers are the heart of the Ascension Parish 4-H program. There are many roles and positions that provide important functions to help make 4-H programming successful on the school and parish levels. Individuals can volunteer to serve project leaders, provide transportation to 4-H events, assist with the parish or school 4-H programs, help with event setup/take down, clerical work, contest judges, and more. If you are interested in volunteering with us, please call the 4-H office. As a volunteer, you are supported by the insurance carried by LSU AgCenter for AgCenter events. You can enroll as a volunteer through the 4-H Online system mentioned previously in the newsletter.
Need something to do during fall break? Registration is now
open for an ASI ATV training that will take place on October 10th at Lamar
Dixon. This training is open to Ascension 4-H members 11 years and up.
Participants will learn the ins and outs of safely operating an ATV, gain
hands-on practice while operating an ATV, complete the online E Course module,
and get to take home their own helmet for future ATV operation! The E-Course
must be completed prior to the day of the training to become a certified safe
rider. Limited Space is available.

We will learn about how to master the cookery contests in our parish, prepare for our Southeast Regional Culinary Arts contest, and learn about the LA Food Challenge and the culinary contests at 4-H University. Ascension 4-H had 4 contestants and 2 awesome coaches who qualified to attend the National Shooting Sports Competition in Grand Island, Nebraska. 2 members are bringing home the Overall National Air Rifle Champion Team Award! Our LA Air Rifle Team placed 3rd in Standing, 3rd in 3P, and 1st in Silhouettes!
Our two Archery contestants were on the 6th place Recurve team and the 4th place Compound Team!
The Ascension BB team, consisting of 7 members and a coach, placed third in the state and qualified for the Daisy National BB Competition in Arkansas. The team finished 27th out of 56 teams.Lots of preparation has begun for the year during this summer. Ascension's 2 State Shooting Sports Ambassadors attending the WeLEAD state planning conference. Ascension's 3 State Livestock Ambassadors attended their state training as well. The Ascension Jr. Leader officers attended a teambuilding retreat and planning day to outline activities for the year.
They also voted on next year's Ascension 4-H service-learning theme which will be Healthy Living. More to come on this years' service activities!
75 4th-6th grade campers attended summer camp at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, LA in July, along with 7 Jr. Camp Counselors and 10 Adult Chaperones. Campers participated in tracks like Outdoor Adventures, Wetlands, Hunter Education, Water Safety, and more! Camp offers the opportunity for members to grow and learn in a cell phone/social media-free environment. It fosters independence and social skills in attendees. Ascension girls and boys both received the cleanest cabin awards. There was 1 camper who received their hunter education certification, 6 who completed swimming lessons, and 4 campers recognized for their good character.
The Ascension Catholic 4-H Club wanted to do a campus beautification project. One weekend in July, we checked out the LSU AgCenter activity stencils and transformed the sidewalks of the school into interactive games and activities that can be utilized during recess and rainy days. Some of the activities painted were inspirational yoga, walking activity path, hopscotch, alphabet tree, and more! We know the students will be thrilled to see these activities as they head back to school.
23 8th-12th graders participated in 4-H University in June on the LSU Campus. Ascension had 5 students appointed to state leadership boards and 12 participants placed in their respective contests! Our 1st place winner will be attending an awards trip to the Ignite Conference in the spring! We are so PROUD!
In a partnership with Ascension Parish Libraries, over 230 kids from ages 5-12 came to learn the importance of Pollinators! The workshop was put on by LSU AgCenter Staff and Master Gardeners in honor of World Pollinator Day. Each child left with their own planted Mammoth sunflower seed. A lot of fun was had by all!
July 31- August 3 is the Louisiana Outdoor Science and Technology (LOST) camp for 7th & 8th graders at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, LA. Ascension 4-H has two participants and 1 Jr. Camp Counselor in attendance.
Ascension 4-H had a blast at the first Ascension 4 YOUth Fest. 4-H's booth focused on Healthy Living by offering cool, refreshing watermelon, pretzels, a My Plate activity, and encouraged youth to become active by riding the "charging station" bike. As youth pedaled the bike, it generated electricity to charge fan, phones and other electronics.
"Get Hooked on Fishing" Day
This year, Ascension 4-H was fortunate enough to be the recipient of the Cabela's Rod and Reel Recycling Program. Cabela's donated nearly 100 rods and reels to Ascension 4-H and hosted our members for a morning of fishing in July. The youth participating each took home a fishing rod and many of the youth were able to catch and release fish that day. We are looking forward to more partnerships with Cabela's!
As a reward for their hard work, the Ascension 4-H Top Jr. Leaders were invited to attend Universal Studios. Members participated in fundraising, service-learning, and worked very hard over the past two years to earn this fun, educational trip. There were 9 youth and 4 adults who attended from Ascension, and they traveled with St. James and Assumption Jr. Leader clubs.
Ascension had 1 of 4 students who was chosen to represent Louisiana at the 2023 True Leaders in Equity Institiute in Washington, D.C. During this trip, youth were prepared to serve as change agents to foster more welcoming and inclusive environments to grow their 4-H communities. Congratulations to Logan M. from EA High for being chosen for this and we can't wait to see what he is going to share with us over the next year!
Ascension had two youth participants in the 4-H summer horse shows. One of the participants did very well at the District Show and qualified for state. At State, she came out 3rd in the premier exhibitor contest which is comprised of an interview, general knowledge test, and skill-a-thon. Congratulations, Blair L. on this huge accomplishment!
