LSU AgCenter showcasing 114 years of innovation at annual Rice Field Day

(05/30/2023) CROWLEY, La. – LSU AgCenter rice researchers are inviting producers and industry professionals to the H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station for its annual field day to be held here on Wednesday, June 28.

“We welcome all rice industry stakeholders to the Rice Research Station where for more than a century Louisiana’s eminent rice researchers have improved upon the sustainability, the nutritional value, the quality and therefore, the profitability of the state’s top grain crop,” Kurt Guidry, H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station resident coordinator, said. “This year, our researchers have worked diligently to continue the LSU AgCenter’s longstanding tradition of exploring new rice varieties and testing best management practices that makes the rice industry stand out among the state’s agricultural enterprises.”

As in past years, the program will begin with field tours from 7:15 to 9 a.m., with a poster session and trade show running concurrently.

Topics will include:

— Rice agronomy research.

— Hybrid rice & specialty rice breeding.

— New rice variety developments.

— Rice entomology & pathology research.

— Weed management.

The indoor program will feature updates from rice industry professionals and government officials, and will begin at 10:30 a.m. Speakers will include John Dennison, chairman of the Louisiana Rice Research Board; Jim Harper, president of the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation; Dr. Mike Strain, commissioner of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry; Betsy Ward, chief executive officer for the USA Rice Federation; and Peter Bachmann, USA Rice Federation vice president of Policy & Governmental Affairs

Other speakers will include Matt Lee, vice president for agriculture and dean of the College of Agriculture; and Mike Salassi, executive associate vice president. and director of the LAES,
