On March 15, members of the LSU AgCenter East & West Feliciana Parishes Family & Consumer Sciences Advisory Leadership Council met at the West Feliciana LSU AgCenter Office. Those in attendance included: Reese Craddock, Leanna Cupit, Patricia Gilmore, Dawn Hoyle, Lanya Mayer, Misty Metz, Cynthia Vessell-Whitaker, Sara Wilson-Rogers, and Annette Zimmer. Layne Langley, LSU AgCenter Area Nutrition Agent, provided an overview of nutrition programming in both parishes. She then shared a power point which included information about the AgCenter including its mission and purpose. Langley gave information on the summer camp programs she delivered as well nutrition and school garden classes she conducted at Bains Lower Elementary. Langley provided details about the adult programs she has led. She told the group about the Healthy Communities Projects that have been completed and about the Solitude Health & Safety Resource Fair that was postponed and rescheduled for April 29. Langley informed the members about her youth work with the 4-H Club and 4-H Mini Farm. She told the group which agencies she provides nutrition resources for as well as which newspapers and social media platforms she uses. She also shared information on the places she advertises her nutrition programs.

Then she opened the floor to discussion and recommendations. Here are the questions and answers provided by those members at the meeting.

What educational program topics could Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) provide that would be helpful to the citizens of both parishes?

  • Utilize Master Gardeners to teach small container gardening
  • Teach youth about keeping their parish beautiful by discussing trash, cans, plastics
  • Offer graduating senior class on small appliances the summer before graduation
  • Offer some one time sessions on current cooking appliances (i.e. air fryer

What can East & West Feliciana Parishes FCS do to increase participation and engagement of parish citizens?

  • Share programs with the Chamber of Commerce
  • Utilize community markets to advise programs
  • Partner with an East Feliciana church to deliver adult programs while youth are attending church

What needs do the citizens of East & West Feliciana Parishes have as it relates to nutrition and health?

  • Information on growing food
  • Conduct a needs assessment to determine what citizens want

How can I better market the FCS programs?

  • Share information on social media about the farmers markets and community markets
  • Work with the ANR Agent, Master Gardeners, and Sheriff to reestablish the community garden in West Feliciana
  • Determine if the West Feliciana Parish Library would like to create a garden
  • Check to see if The Bluffs neighborhood has an active community garden and if so partner with them
