Livestock Show &
Stick Horse Rodeo

The Ascension Parish Livestock Show will be held at Lamar Dixon on January 20-21st! All livestock animals will arrive by 5pm Friday night, and we will kick off the show with our Annual Stick Horse Rodeo! All youth 11 and younger are encouraged to participate in the stick horse rodeo events, ranging from bucking stick horses to barrel racing and more! At $5.00 per event, registration for the stick horse events will kick off at 6 pm in Barn 8 at Lamar Dixon. There is no charge to watch! The judging of the livestock show will begin at 8 am Saturday morning. Come on by!

Graduating Seniors- Honor Cords

Don’t forget to apply to get your Honor Cords to wear while walking at your high school graduation! You have worked hard during your 4-H career so wear your honor cord PROUDLY! Applications are available and must be submitted online at Senior Honor Cords ( It takes less than 5 minutes to complete! Applications are due by February 8th! The cords will be sent to the Ascension Extension Office and given at Achievement Day (unless needed earlier).

Graduating Seniors- Scholarships

Seniors, there are lots of scholarships out there for you through 4-H! By completing ONE application, you will be entered for a chance to win any of the state 4-H scholarships, the local State 4-H Foundation Scholarship, the Ascension 4-H Foundation scholarships, AND the locally awarded Scott Tractor Foundation scholarship. Be sure you are in contact with the 4-H office, so you are not missing out on these opportunities! We have money that we want to give away!!!February 15th at 4:30 pm is the deadline for this scholarship application to be turned into the Extension Office for the agents to help with feedback and editing. The FINAL submission deadline is March 1. Contact the office if you have not already received the application and it can be found on our website under awards/applications.

Outstanding 4-H’er Nominations

As spring draws closers, we become busier, but be sure to remain active in your school club and parish 4-H activities! Each club leader will be eligible to nominate two members for the club and parish Outstanding 4-Her Award to be recognized at Achievement Day. Applications and more information will be forthcoming.

Demo Day

The Ascension 4-H Demo Day is coming up on Friday, January 13th, in the Lamar Dixon Vendor Rooms ** Location change**.There will be workshops/activities offered for youth to participate while judging is taking place. The Demo Day event details, registration link, and rules for each contest are posted in the Demo Day Contest tab at are the lists of contests offered and a few tidbits about some of them:

  • Public Speaking Senior-level winners may be eligible for a 4-H University Scholarship)
  • Interview Prep Senior-level winners may be eligible for a 4-H University Scholarship)
  • Dress Review Garment Judging
  • Ready to Wear Garment Judging and Contest
  • General & Food Demonstrations
  • **Throwback Contest** Ascension 4-H Chicken Que
  • Commodity Ambassador Illustrated Talks & Demonstration Contests. Preparatory contest to assist 4-H members interested in the state competition. Illustrated Talk Topics include- Beef, Chicken, Turkey, Seafood, Sugar, Sweet Potato, or Rice. The demonstration contest is in Egg Preparation.
  • LifeBook Cover Design Competition
  • Exhibits- No pre-registration required. (Can be turned into the 4-H office prior to Demo Day) Exhibit Categories are as follows:
    • Arts & Crafts (Accessories, Jewelry, Paper, Plastic, wood, other)
    • Photography (5x7 framed prints of Animals, Nature, People)
    • Recycled Art (Create art using used items only)
    • Poster Contests- Beef Or Dairy– top posters sent to state competition, or 4-H Themed Poster
  • Sewing (Non-Wearable Only)
  • Project Exhibit– Educational display board about your 4-H project area.
  • Decorated Wreath

Ascension Chicken Que Contest- Held @ Demo Day!

We are super excited to be bringing back a contest from our 4-H past with some tweaks and added features! This January at Demo Day (Jan 13th), Ascension 4-H youth with a caring adult or parent will have the opportunity to show off their outdoor culinary skills with a Chicken Barbeque Contest! More specific contest details and guidelines are posted on our website with our Demo Day contest rules. If you would like to register your team, sponsor a contestant, or volunteer to help conduct the contest, please contact the 4-H office or email Mrs. Stephanie at!

Clothing Contests- Held @ Demo Day!

Sew with Cotton, Dress Revue and Ready to Wear will be happening on Friday, January 13, 10:00am at Demo Day. Get those final stitches done on your apron, skirt, or jumper and be ready to show off your creation! Entry forms and rules are available to all 4-H members on the website.

Home & Style National Sewing Day Activity

The Home N Style club will be observing Quilt of Valor’s National Sew Day on Saturday, February 4 from 10 am to 2 pm at the 4-H office. Pre-cut Quilt kits will be provided to members who attend this fun day of sewing. We will be sewing quilt tops that will later be quilted and presented to local Veterans in appreciation for their service. Open to all 4-H members. Pre-register by calling the 4-H office so we can have the appropriate kits ready, bring your sewing kits and come with your bagged lunch. We have a limited number of sewing machines available, or you may bring your own machine. This will be a great opportunity for your community service hours

Cookery Contest- January- **New Contest** Commodity Contest

This is a completely new contest so please read over the contest guidelines very carefully. The commodity contest will include 3 categories which are: Pecans, Rice, and Sweet Potatoes. All three are Louisiana commodities which we are trying to highlight with this new cookery event. For each of our monthly contest entries, you will need to submit 2 copies of your recipe and 2 servings of your dish in a disposable container. You can earn extra points by submitting pictures of the before (ingredients), during preparation (action shots), and after (finished product) you have completed your dish and a short summary about your experience of cooking the dish. All of these extra components can be emailed to Mrs. Stephanie. The drop off day for your completed dish is on January 30th from 8 am to 5:30pm. From there, your entries will be judged by our volunteers. More detailed guidelines and explanations will be available soon on our website at!!

New Record Book Document

There are changes to the State record book competition, so we will also update our Ascension Parish records competition. As you continue through the year, it’s important to keep track of all your activities and accomplishments to make submitting your record book easier in the spring. The NEW Record Book Document can be found at .This new document must be used for the parish and state record book competitions, so please start transitioning your info! Record Books will be due to the Ascension Office around March, so please start working!

Mardi Gras T-Shirt Design Contest

Express your Mardi Gras Mambo flare and create your own Mardi Gras shirt for the Annual Ascension 4-H Mardi Gras Shirt design contest. The contest will take place at the Mardi Gras Masquerade Fashion Show where you will learn to walk the runway and model your shirt! To participate in the Mardi Gras T-Shirt Design Contest you must wear your decorated Mardi Gras shirt to the Fashion Show on February 16th at 6 pm in the 4-H office. Please limit attendance to participants and 2 guests.

The contest rules/guidelines are:

  • A solid t-shirt of any color should be used by the 4-H member to create the shirt design.
  • All items must be permanently attached (to where they won’t easily fall off)hot glue, etc.
  • Be creative; Only one entry per person. Homemade
  • Must be age-appropriate.

4-H Golden Clover Award & Emerald Achievement Awards

The 4-H Golden Clover Award and Emerald Achievement Award in Louisiana gives recognition to 4-H Club members who have shown outstanding leadership ability in their club and their parish. The object of the program is to encourage project growth and a broad program of 4-H club members who have shown outstanding leadership ability in their club and their parish. If you are active in your club or on a parish level, please consider applying.
Applications for these awards are due to the 4-H office on March 15, 2021. A club member may win the award only one time. Members in 6th-12th grades may be eligible to apply. Visit the applications/awards section of our website to download an application!

Mark Your Calendars- Summer Camp Dates Are Out!

Informational meetings for both camp opportunities will be forthcoming around March, but we wanted to go ahead and provide you with the dates early so you can plan around them😊 We do expect a 7th and 8th-grade camp (LOST camp) as well, but we do not have any information on it at this time.

  • 4-H University (8th-12th Grades)- LSU Campus- June 20-23, 2023
  • 4-H Summer Camp (4th-6th Grades)- Pollock, LA- July 17-21, 2023
