Get It Greauxing! It’s time for the Ascension Youth Vegetable Garden Contest!!Youth gardens less than 1000 sq. ft. and containing at least 4 different types of vegetables may be entered into the contest. Gardens will be judged in May on the following criteria: record keeping, productivity, weeds, insects, disease, location, and a bonus of containing LSU AgCenter recommended varieties. All gardens must be located in Ascension Parish. School gardens are also eligible to enter the contest and will be judged in a separate category. Call the office or email mjsimoneaux@agcenter.lsu.edu by April 29th to enter your garden!
As a result of ongoing repairs to Camp Grant Walker from hurricane damage and flooding, there are very limited spots for Ascension Parish youth to attend.6th grade 4-H members have received priority registration ending on Tuesday, April 5th.We will continue to offer priority registration by grade level. See priority deadlines below. After each deadline, we will select campers and alternates based on a lottery system. All interested campers will be contacted with selection results and further information with 2 days of the submission DEADLINE. The summer camp deposit of $50.00 and summer camp participant REQUIRED parent informational meeting for THOSE SELECTED will be held on Thursday, April 28 at 6pm.More details will be provided to selected participants.

Enrolled Ascension 4-H members are eligible to participate in the 4-H BINGO contest! We are now in the blackout phase of the contest! The first 5 members who receive blackout by April 25 will receive a prize. Cards are available for download in the “contest” section of our website. Full rules can also be found on our website. Thursday, May 5th, 2022 at the Dutchtown High School gym! This year’s theme is “Mental Health Matters!” A-Day will be a fun filled day of talent demonstrations, awards, spirit competitions, games, service and more! Parents are encouraged to attend Achievement Day and will be seated in chairs on the gym floor. The program will begin promptly at 9:45am and will end at 1:30pm. Concessions will be sold. We hope your club has begun preparing for the song, yell, t-shirt, flag/banner, service, and scrapbook competitions! Check with your club leader to see how you can help!
Drum roll please….This year’s end of the year service project will be collecting Pop Tabs! Get your club and school on board to begin bringing in the tabs of any type of can… soup, soft drinks, energy drinks, etc. We are crossing our fingers that we will be able to host an Achievement Day this year, date TBA. In the meantime, we thought that we would announce our Achievement Day Service project that will take place regardless of whether we can meet or not. All of the proceeds of the sale of the metal pop tabs will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House. The pop tab deadline will be end of April/early May. Exact date will be announced soon! There will be a friendly competition to see which club can collect the most pounds of pop tabs! Good luck!
Each year 4-H members who are in the 8th-12th grades are eligible to participate in 4-H University to STRIVE to reach their maximum potential in more than 40 competitive events. It is a culmination of a 4-H member’s year of hard work and dedication. Events range from Agricultural Use Demonstration, Automotive Care, Fishing Sports, Public Speaking, Fashion Revue, and more! Through competing, youth demonstrate life skills in teamwork, decision making, problem solving, resiliency, and many more. Each competitive event allows youth an opportunity to STRIVE in personal growth, skill mastery, and other life skills vital to functioning members of society. This year’s 4-H University event will take place on the LSU Campus June 21st-24th. Registration Deadline: May 16- all paperwork and money are due. Ready to take your leadership and 4-H experience to the next level? You may want to consider applying for a LA State 4-H Leadership Board! Members in 8th-12th grades may be eligible to apply. Leadership Boards are offered in the areas of Science, Engineering, & Technology (SET), Food & Fitness, Fashion, Wetlands Ambassador Team (WAT), Shooting Sports Ambassadors, and Executive Board. If interested, contact the 4-H Office. Deadline to apply is April 14.

Join in on the fun and “Discover the Possibilities” at the Agricultural Career Day hosted by the LSU AgCenter Sugar Research Station in St. Gabriel on April 13.Any 8th-12th grade 4-H member is invited to attend! We have 10 spots available on a first come, first served basis. Students can meet at the 4-H office and ride with the agents to attend.
