The 4-H Golden Clover Award and Emerald Achievement Award in Louisiana gives recognition to 4-H Club members who have shown outstanding leadership ability in their club and their parish. The object of the program is to encourage project growth and a broad program of 4-H club members who have shown outstanding leadership ability in their club and their parish. If you are active in your club or on a parish level, please consider applying.
Applications for these awards are due to the 4-H office on March 15, 2022.A club member may win the award only one time. Members in 6th-12th grades may be eligible to apply. Visit the awards section of our website to download an application.
The deadline to submit record books to the 4-H office for the competition is April 1st. Record books consist of your completed activity guide and/or project book along with your completed portfolio! If you have not received your project books/activity guides, please let us know! The digital portfolio and records sheet can be found at https://www.lsuagcenter.com/topics/kids_teens/projects/4h-agent-resources/4-h-portfolio . Remember, portfolios can be added on from year to year and can consist of up to 3 years of work! Add pictures with captions of you completing projects and activities in your project area for a more complete portfolio! Ribbons and certificates do not need to be included. On Thursday, March 17th, 6pm there will be a Portfolio Workshop in the 4-H Office. This workshop is open to all Ascension 4-Hers who would like tips and ideas to help make their record book more competitive. Please RSVP if you plan to attend the workshop as we will have a max amount of participants. First come, first serve. Attendees should bring their mostly completed project book, portfolio book, and any materials that you wish to include in your record book.
The Mondart Scholarship is a $1,000.00 renewable scholarship opportunity for those freshmen entering the LSU College of Agriculture. The submission deadline is March 21st.Please contact cbrady@agcenter.lsu.edu for details.
4-Hers who have a special talent, whether singing, dancing, playing an instrument, etc. can sign up to be considered to be showcased in the LIVE 4-H Achievement Day Talent Showcase! To be considered, 4-Hers should complete the talent show entry form and submit a clear, quality video of their talent. More details and entry forms can be found on our website, www.lsuagcenter.com/ascension4h, under contests. Entry forms and talent videos are due to the office by April 1st! The agents will review the forms and videos to select the acts to be showcased LIVE at Achievement Day on May 5th! Due to time limits, only a couple acts will be selected in each age division to perform live.
Drum roll please….This year’s end of the year service project will be colleting Pop Tabs! Get your club and school on board to begin bringing in the tabs of any type of can… soup, soft drinks, energy drinks, etc. We are crossing our fingers that we will be able to host an Achievement Day this year, date TBA. In the meantime, we thought that we would announce our Achievement Day Service project that will take place regardless of whether we can meet or not. All of the proceeds of the sale of the metal pop tabs will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House. The pop tab deadline will be end of April/early May. Exact date will be announced soon! There will be a friendly competition to see which club can collect the most pounds of pop tabs! Good luck!
Drive through Raising Cane’s on Airline in Gonzales or Prairieville on March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day!) from 10:00am until closing to help “Raise A Little Green for 4-H.” Be sure to mention Ascension 4-H when ordering for Ascension 4-H to receive 15% of the location’s profits from that night! Each year 4-H members who are in the 8th-12th grades are eligible to participate in 4-H University to STRIVE to reach their maximum potential in more than 40 competitive events. It is a culmination of a 4-H member’s year of hard work and dedication. Events range from Agricultural Use Demonstration, Automotive Care, Fishing Sports, Public Speaking, Fashion Revue, and more! Through competing, youth demonstrate life skills in teamwork, decision making, problem solving, resiliency, and many more. Each competitive event allows youth an opportunity to STRIVE in personal growth, skill mastery, and other life skills vital to functioning members of society. This year’s 4-H University event will take place on the LSU Campus June 21st-24th. Registration Deadline: May 16- all paperwork and money are due. There will be a MANDATORY INFORMATIONAL MEETING on March 24 for participants and parents.
Ready to take your leadership and 4-H experience to the next level? You may want to consider applying for a LA State 4-H Leadership Board! Members in 8th-12th grades may be eligible to apply. Leadership Boards are offered in the areas of Science, Engineering, & Technology (SET), Food & Fitness, Fashion, Wetlands Ambassador Team (WAT), Shooting Sports Ambassadors, and Executive Board. If interested, contact the 4-H Office. Deadline to apply is April 15.
Enrolled Ascension 4-H members are eligible to participate in the 4-H BINGO contest! We are now in the blackout phase of the contest! The first 5 members who receive blackout by April 25 will receive a prize. Cards are available for download in the “contest” section of our website. Full rules can also be found on our website. Join in on the fun and “Discover the Possibilities” at the Agricultural Career Day hosted by the LSU AgCenter Sugar Research Station in St. Gabriel on April 13.Any 8th-12th grade 4-H member is invited to attend! We have 10 spots available on a first come, first served basis. Students can meet at the 4-H office and ride with the agents to attend. For a registration form and more information, please contact our office.
Our final cookery contest of the year will be here soon! The Seafood Cookery has five categories which are: Crawfish, Shrimp, Crab, Oyster, Fish & Other. The dish drop-off will be the Monday, March 21 from 8:00 am until 5:30 pm. All items need to be transported on ice, it’s proper food safety! Be sure to check the Facebook event page or the website for the most up-to-date contest rules that will be posted. If you have any questions please email Mrs. Stephanie or call the office!
Ready for an Adventure? We will be hosting monthly Outdoor Adventure meeting this spring! The first meeting will take place on Thursday, March 31 at 6pm in the 4-H Office! These meetings will cover different skills that can hep you on any Outdoor Adventure! Meetings will be geared toward Middle School, but any age is welcomed. To sign up for the March meeting, please contact the office.
If you may be interested in participating in the Summer 4-H Horse Shows, please contact the office ASAP! Events such as roping, barrel racing, pole bending, ranch riding, western pleasure, hunter under saddle, and much more are offered at the summer shows. April 1st is the possession deadline. A copy of the horse’s registration papers, or a grade horse certificate must be submitted to the office by April 1st.
The Parish, District, and State Livestock Shows are now completed. The Ascension Parish Livestock Show team did an amazing job in representing Ascension during each of these events We would like to congratulate all of our winners and let ALL of our livestock show exhibitors know how PROUD we are of them. The completion of livestock shows marks the beginning of our local shooting sports competitions. These include our co-hosted East Baton Rouge match, the Ascension Invitational, and our state qualifying Southern Regional. Our members will get to experience their hard work, dedication, and training come to fruition. They will find their areas that need additional work and gain confidence to continue competing. Please join us in sending well wishes to our Ascension competitors and all shooting sports members.
Marsh Maneuvers is a 4-H camp for high schoolers that offers hands-on learning about Louisiana’s coast! Some of the unique experiences include taking a tour of the marsh in an airboat, helping restore wetlands by planting marsh grass, going crabbing, and touring the Tabasco Factory and Jungle Gardens at Avery Island. The Application Deadline is March 15th. There will be 2 camps for our region I- July 18-22 or II- July 25-29 with only 16 participants each.
