The Ascension 4-H Demo Day is coming up on Friday, January 14th, and it’s never too early to begin planning! The holidays make a great time to work on your Demo Day submissions! There will also be activity stations for our 4-H members to participate in while the judging and contests take place. We are super excited to be bringing back a contest from our 4-H past with some tweaks and added features! This January at Demo Day (Jan 14th), Ascension 4-H youth will have the opportunity to show off their outdoor culinary skills with a Chicken Barbeque Contest! More specific contest details and guidelines are posted on our website with our Demo Day contest rules. If you would like to sponsor a contestant or volunteer to help conduct the contest, please contact the 4-H office or email Mrs. Stephanie at sgravois@agcenter.lsu.edu!
Don’t forget to apply to get your Honor Cords to wear while walking at your high school graduation! You have worked hard during your 4-H career so wear your honor cord PROUDLY! Applications are available and must be submitted online at Senior Honor Cords (lsuagcenter.com).It takes less than 5 minutes to complete! Applications are due by January 28th!The cords will be sent to the Ascension Extension Office and you will be notified for pick up in early spring.
There is limited seating capacity for the “Back to Leadership” Junior Leadership Conference Experience. JLC is a high-quality, fun leadership camp, for members 14 and older, planned and put on by the Louisiana State 4-H Executive Board. If you are interested in increasing your leadership skills, service learning, teamwork, and networking with other 4-Hers from across the state then this is the camp for you! Different activities are being presented in the areas of team building, communication, responsibility, and leadership. Each parish is allowed to register 5 participants on a first-come, first-serve basis. This is a one-night event, and you can choose your date until spots are filled. Transportation will not be provided. Email cbrady@agcenter.lsu.edu to get information to reserve your spot.

Express your Mardi Gras Mambo flare and create your own Mardi Gras shirt for the Annual Ascension 4-H Mardi Gras Shirt design contest. The contest will take place at the Mardi Gras Masquerade Fashion Show where you will learn to walk the runway and model your shirt! To participate in the Mardi Gras T-Shirt Design Contest you must wear your decorated Mardi Gras shirt to the Fashion Show on February 17th at 6 pm in the 4-H office. Please limit attendance to participants and 1-2 guests.
The contest rules/guidelines are:
A solid t-shirt of any color should be used by the 4-H member to create the shirt design.
All items must be permanently attached (to where they won’t easily fall off)hot glue, etc.
Be creative; Only one entry per person.
Must be age-appropriate.
Be on the lookout to receive your project book/activity guides and portfolios this month, if you have not already received them! We have been bringing them to the schools for distribution. The digital portfolio and records sheet can be found at https://www.lsuagcenter.com/topics/kids_teens/projects/4-h-portfolio. All members at large can stop by the office to pick up your books. Please call ahead to be sure someone is at the office. We plan to have our traditional record book contest again this year. Record books consist of a portfolio + project book/activity guide. A record book workshop will be held on Demo Day, January 14th! Bring what you have to work on. Contest submission deadline TBA.
Graduating Seniors- Scholarships
Seniors, there are lots of scholarships out there for you through 4-H! By completing one application, you will be entered for a chance to win any of the state 4-H scholarships, the local State 4-H Foundation Scholarship, the Ascension 4-H Foundation scholarships, and the locally awarded Scott Tractor Foundation scholarship. Be sure you are in contact with the 4-H office so you are not missing out on these opportunities! We have money that we want to give away!!!
February 4th at 4:30 pm is the deadline for this scholarship application to be turned into the Extension Office for the agents to help with feedback and editing. The final submission deadline is February 25.Contact the office if you have not already received the application and it can be found on our website under awards/applications.
The 4-H Golden Clover Award and Emerald Achievement Award in Louisiana gives recognition to 4-H Club members who have shown outstanding leadership ability in their club and their parish. The object of the program is to encourage project growth and a broad program of 4-H club members who have shown outstanding leadership ability in their club and their parish. If you are active in your club or on a parish level, please consider applying.
Applications for these awards are due to the 4-H office on March 15, 2021. A club member may win the award only one time. Members in 6th-12th grades may be eligible to apply. Visit the awards section of our website to download an application.
Our first cookery contest of the new year is here and it’s a very fun and creative one!! It’s Bento box, which is a Japanese-style lunch box geared to encourage kiddos to get all of the food items recommended. Please research for design ideas! The dish drop-off will be the Monday, January 24th from 8:00 am until 5:30 pm. All items need to be transported on ice, it’s proper food safety! After receiving feedback from parents and our judges our cookery guidelines have been adjusted to reflect the changes so please be sure to check the Facebook event page or the website for the most up-to-date contest rules. 8th-12th graders will have the opportunity to sharpen their marketing and financial management skills as they compete in teams to build and manage their own cooperative business at the 2022 Cooperative Enterprise Teen Leadership Conference. The conference will take place at the Wesley Center in Woodworth La. from Thursday, March 24th- Saturday, March 26th. This event is generously sponsored by the Louisiana Council of Farmer Cooperatives. Students that are interested in business would benefit from this experience.
