Science Lab: Orange Floats

Properties of matter are measurable and observable without changing the identity of the matter. These are called physical properties. Matter can have mass, volume, length, shape, color, taste, and density. Density is a measure of the mass per unit volume of a substance. Water has a density of 1 gram per milliliter. Objects will float in water if their density is less than 1 gram per milliliter. You can explore density by testing the buoyancy of an orange both peeled and unpeeled.

Healthy Living: Mental Health

Mindfulness is a practice some people use to re-set their perspective each day. The basics are to guide the mind to be present in the moment and nonjudgmental about how we think, feel, and behave. Mindfulness activities like deep breathing, yoga, journaling, and listening to music can help you center your focus. When you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings, you can begin to change your responses to situations. In time, this can help make you more resilient. Helen Keller who was born blind and deaf, said, "When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us."

Membership and participation in activities and events are open to all citizens without regard to race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, veteran status or disability. If you have a disability that requires special accommodation for your participation, please contact us at 318-649-2663. Louisiana 4-H is an educational program of the LSU AgCenter. The LSU AgCenter and LSU provide equal opportunities in programs and employment.
