Assistant/Associate/Extension Agent (Nutrition Agent)
Richland and West Carroll Parishes
Work Location: The area to be served is a two-parish area including Richland and West Carroll Parishes, which are in Northeast Louisiana. The position will be primarily domiciled in Richland Parish. The Extension office is in Rayville, Louisiana.
Position Description: The Assistant/Associate/Extension Agent will work under the supervision and direction of the Parish Chair, Regional Director, FCS regional coordinator, and FCS state office staff. This position will provide overall leadership for the general health and wellness and nutrition programs. Selected programs that will be used are Break Up with Salt; Dining with Diabetes; Eat Smart, Live Strong for Older Adults; Faithful Families: Eating Smart and Moving More; Smart Portions; CATCH; Kids in the Kitchen; and C.H.E.F. The Extension Agent will work in assigned parish(es) on the Healthy Communities projects, which are designed to improve the nutrition and health of the community members. The community development project(s) will promote a broad Healthy Communities initiative to increase healthy food access and physical activity in the parish by addressing the food system and built environment. The Extension Agent is responsible for working with program advisory committees to identify local needs, to develop programs that respond to those needs, and to assess the impacts of the programs. This individual must be willing to maintain professional competence as an Extension Agent of the LSU AgCenter. The Extension Agent is expected to work collaboratively with other agents in the parishes and to perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor(s). Coordination and collaboration with other LSU AgCenter Extension faculty and SU AgCenter staff will be essential.
Qualification Requirements: A baccalaureate degree in nutrition, family and consumer sciences, human ecology, vocational education or a closely related field from an accredited college or university is required. A registered dietician with community experience is preferred. The applicant must have an undergraduate degree with an overall grade-point average of at least 2.5 (all GPA requirements based on a 4.0 system) or a master’s degree or a current grade-point average of at least 3.0 on at least 12 hours of graduate credit. A master’s degree in a field listed above is desired. The applicant must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. Experience in recruiting, training and supervising volunteers and experience in teaching and applying principles of leadership development is also desired. Knowledge of public relations and the ability to cope with change are highly desirable characteristics. Ability to work with and through others is essential as is the ability to function with minimum supervision.
Salary and Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options. Conditions of Employment: A personal automobile and appropriate insurance coverage is required (travel allowance provided). Satisfactory completion of a specific graduate level extension course (3 credit hours) is generally required in the first two years of employment. Additionally, a faculty member who does not have a related master’s degree must complete an additional 12 hours of related graduate level coursework to be promoted to associate agent and such promotion must occur in the first seven years of employment. An exception is that additional agent experience may be substituted for twelve hours of coursework, but not for the required course.
