It's that time of year again. The sun is shining, school is out, and everyone is excited to get moving this summer! June is known for Pride events, Juneteenth celebrations, and Fathers' Day but did you know it is also recognized as safety month? With pandemic restrictions lifting and more people spending time outside being active, it is a good idea to reflect on some tips for safe travel, no matter what your mode of transportation!
Social media has sparked a renewed interest in active transport such as skating, skateboarding and biking in addition to other forms of outdoor fun and exercise. It is always important to wear a helmet and protective gear to prevent injuries while burning those calories. If you are walking or skating, you should remember that if no sidewalk is available, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic. In the evening, it is important to use reflectors or lights to ensure that you're visible to motorists. Always assume no one sees you and be prepared to move onto the shoulder to make room for cars. For your next bike ride, remember to ride your bike on the right side of the road with traffic. Memorize and use bike hand signals. Consider people passing on the left and leave plenty of space, at least 6 feet for proper social distancing! In the evening, use reflectors or lights to ensure you are visible to motorists, but always assume no one sees you.
A very important factor of safe, active transport is being mindful of distractions. You want to make sure that if you are listening to music that you can hear your surrounding environment. While social media posts about popular trends are fun, be mindful of what's going on around you if you are recording or being recorded by a friend. It is a good idea to scope out safe locations in your community while planning to practice or record footage for social media.
