At the public forum held in downtown Houma on January of 2019, the community members in attendance said that there was a lack of produce and access to healthy items. Live Healthy Houma partnered with Houma Beauty, a corner store in downtown Houma, to highlight and expand healthy options.
The Stock Healthy, Shop Healthy program is used to increase both supply and demand of healthy options. For example, shelf talkers have been placed on store shelves to highlight healthy options so that consumers can easily make the healthy choice.
Currently, Houma Beauty is trying to expand their healthy options by working to get more produce into the store as well as frozen grocery goods. Also, area nutrition agent, Amanda Gibson, conducts monthly food demonstrations to showcase healthy recipes. To view an article about Houma Beauty, click here.
Live Healthy Houma partnered with Zealous Leadership association and the Concered Clergy to beautify the parking lot of Houma Beauty. This included painting parking lot lines, including handicap accessible ones, so that community members felt safer going to and from the store. Other projects for this event included landscaping, pressure washing, litter clean-up, and painting a mural. To see a video about this beautification project, click here.
