March is National Nutrition Month®, a national campaign sponsored by The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. It was created to highlight the importance of making informed food choices and developing healthy eating habits. This year’s theme is “Eat Right, Bite by Bite”. Not only does this theme play into kids love of rhymes, but also reiterates the classic philosophy “every little bit counts.” In this case, every bite of nutrition counts.

The Academy says, “’Eat Right, Bite by Bite’ is fun, positive, kid-friendly, inclusive and adaptable.” With that said, nutrition does not have to be overwhelming. Small changes over time can have a tremendous effect on your long-term health.

Setting SMART goals is a perfect way to get started. “SMART” is an acronym that encourages you to make goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound.

Try these 3 SMART goals during the month of March as we celebrate nutrition:

  • Eat more fruits and vegetables by making half your plate fruits and vegetables. Make 2 cups of fruit and 2 ½ cups of vegetables your daily goal. Try different types, including fresh, frozen and canned.
  • Increase fiber in your diet by making half of your grains whole grains. Consume brown rice, whole wheat pasta, whole grain cereal, or whole wheat bread 3 times per week.
  • Limit sodium, saturated fat and trans-fat while saving money by cooking at home more often. Make enough to pack a lunch for work the next day.

These may seem like small tasks for some while daunting for others. National Nutrition Month® is intended to meet all eating patterns so adjust as necessary for your own health goals. Remember, every bite counts, so try your best to make ‘SMART’ decisions every day.
