Simon, Dr. Jackie

Dr. Jackie Simon has served St. Martin Parish as a 4‑H member, a club leader, a Livestock Project leader, a Livestock Advisory Committee member and a 4-H Advisory Committee member since 1998. She has been a sponsor of the St. Martin Parish Livestock Show for the past 18 years.

Dr. Simon has conducted numerous educational sessions for the youth of St. Martin Parish, including the annual Achievement Day and annual poultry clinics, utilizing hands-on techniques with live birds. Dr. Jackie provides health certificates at no charge to the livestock exhibitors. She has provided sponsorship for prizes and is always willing to teach youth how to be successful showmen, allowing them to gain confidence and feel a sense of belonging in the show ring. She has encouraged older youth to help her present sessions and asks Jr. Leader members to assist during annual rabies clinics, allowing them to explore a veterinary career.

In 2014, Dr. Simon received the Attorney General Livestock Leader award at the State Livestock Show for her dedication to the St. Martin Parish Livestock program. She not only worked with youth, but with the parents of new exhibitors to prepare them for the project by making home visits, taking phone calls, showing them proper care techniques and answering emails. Dr. Simon has provided expert animal science opinions during livestock advisory committee meetings, informing parents and youth of the proper and ethical treatment of animals.

Dr. Jackie has served as a member of many groups where she represented the 4‑H livestock project. They include the Acadiana Area Veterinarian Association, the Louisiana Veterinarian Medical Association, the American Veterinarian Medical Association, the Lafayette Parish Animal Control Advisory Board and the St. Martin Parish Humane Society.
