Any St. Tammany Parish adult with a willingness to learn and a desire to help others with their horticulture needs can become a Louisiana Master Gardener. Master Gardeners should be interested in horticulture, willing to help people, outgoing, flexible, dependable, unbiased and open-minded. Previous volunteer work and good verbal skills are desirable but not required.
The Louisiana Master Gardener program is a service and educational activity designed to recruit and train volunteers to help meet the needs of home gardeners while providing an enjoyable and worthwhile service experience for volunteers. Experienced and beginning gardeners seeking up-to-date horticultural information can advance their gardening expertise and gain self-satisfaction by participating. Subject matter includes horticulture, plant science, pest control, lawn care, ornamentals, fruit and nuts, and vegetables.
If you are interested in applying for the Louisiana Master Gardener program please download the application below. Return completed applications to the St. Tammany Parish Extension Office at 1301 N. Florida St. Covington, LA 70433. Office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday – Friday and closed for lunch from 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. Applications will be will be due by the end of July. The program is extremely popular. If more than 32 applications are received, then applicants will be evaluated and ranked by committee. Classes are held at St. Tammany Parish Extension Office on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon beginning in mid-August and ending early-November.
There will be a fee to those who are selected for the training and the local Master Gardener Association. The program is open to all adults, regardless of socioeconomic level, race, color, sex, religion or national origin.
