Riding out

The time is quickly approaching for the 4th annual Master Horseman Benefit Trail Ride and Campout on Nov 2-3, 2013 in Cade, La.  Organized by the LSU AgCenter Master Horseman Advisory Committee in 2010, this event provides fun, excitement, education, and a way to help fund Master Horseman programs.  It is held at the Kirk Guilbeaux Ranch just off LA. 182, south of Cade.  It involves riding on several hundred acres of open pasture, wooded trails and tree-lined canals and across a variety of natural obstacles.

The ride begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2. Riders must arrive early enough to check in, present Coggin's papers, sign release forms and pay their fees (checks accepted). Cost is $40 per adult and $15 for kids 4-H age and older, for both days.  That will include meals Saturday at noon, Saturday evening, Sunday morning breakfast and Sunday lunch. (Fees are reduced to $30 Saturday only, and $20 Sunday only for adults and $10 and $5 respectively for youth).  Activities end after lunch on Sunday.

Activities will include several trail rides, an auction, a pony express ride, a cattle gather, a mounted shooting demonstration, campfire story-telling/sing-along and sleeping under the stars.  Bring your own tent, teepee, bedroll or self-contained living quarters trailer.  No hookups are available.  Firewood provided.  Trails will include the Big Cypress trail, the Railroad Ravine, the Coyote Canyon, the Dead Tree Jungle, Honey Bee Hill and more. (This ride is not for beginners with no experience, nor is it open to wagons.)

For the safety and enjoyment of all riders, rules include no dogs (the ranch has multiple Great Pyrenees as guard dogs) no alcohol on the trail, no doubling, no studs, no littering, no loud music, no shortcutting on the trail (there are yellow jackets, armadillo holes, barbed wire fences and beehives), no riding in only a halter.  Directions to get to the Master Horseman Trail Ride: go south of Lafayette on US-90 E (6.1 miles).  Take the Cade/St. Martinville exit.  Turn left at the end of the exit ramp onto LA 182. Continue to follow LA 182 S.  Destination will be on the left (5.1 miles). Arrive at first driveway on the left past Spanish Trail Golf Club, 1655 Old Spanish Trail, St. Martinville, La.
