BATON ROUGE -- Sustaining the Earth: An Engineering Approach is a course taught by Dr. Norma Alcantar, associate professor with the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at the University of South Florida. Alcantar holds a doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico.

Course Objectives

  1. Students will gain an understanding of sustainability and how it applies to green engineering processing and design.
  2. Students will learn to determine how design decisions and material selection affect environmental impact and costs.
  3. Students will understand how to construct a life cycle assessment (LCA) and how to apply LCA tools to engineering processing and design.
  4. Students will learn to apply green engineering principles and LCA through a design project.
  5. Students will learn how the human dimension is integrated into sustainable design and materials.
